Ok here's the deal.  I've found that a set of very old clubs I made back about 96 when I started to play the irons seem to very are long.  Clones of Ping Eye 2's.  So close in fact Karsten sued the company and won.  I find that these are a half a club to a full club longer than say my Hogan Edge GCD's.  And for that fact longer than all of my iron sets save for Callway X16's I have.  So the scenario is this, 155 out, 7 iron in the Pro Tours but they may be a bit right or left depending on how my swing is.  Mostly left a wee bit with a draw.  The GCD's will be more accurate as on line but about 145 in distance.  So obviously I use a 6 lets say instead of a 7.  Now the problem is exacerbated with the stronger iron but not much.  The PT's have more roll to and the GCD's have more check in them.  Just wondering thoughts.  thanks

You should compare the lofts of the sets.  I would guess that the "6 iron" of your GCDs is similar in loft to the "7 iron" of your Ping knock offs.  So you think the GCDs are more accurate than the Pings because the "7 iron" goes straighter, when it's likely that it only goes straighter because it's actually an 8 iron or 7.5 iron.

To answer the title question ... I already have distance, so I'd like to add accuracy to the equation.  Hitting from the fairway is fun.

Like you I have stronger lofts in my irons (Wilson Staff Di9) than in most irons so I hit them "Farther" than I did with my old set.  I'm trying to improve my accuracy now.  I think that that will lower my handicap quicker than increased distance will.

Well, the question was, "Distance or accuracy?", right? Once you can hit the ball a reasonable distance from the tees you're playing, I think accuracy trumps distance, and I don't think it's even close. I don't really care what number I have to pull from a particular yardage, but I care a lot about how accurate I am. I'm happy to match up with Mr. Macho who slams 8i 170 but wears out his wedge in bunkers every round, while I pull 5 or 6 and walk up and fix a ball mark while he's raking. But that's just me.....;-)

When I first started playing, I saw all of these old geezers hitting little loopers up the fairway every shot. Not more than 150 yards, but always straight down the middle. I started using only my irons (since I had horrible woods control back then) and playing from the fairway. Over time, I added fairway woods and eventually a driver to the equation..

In short accuracy > distance.

Single digit handicap

    • Day 22: mirror work for a while. Working on my elbow in the downswing - keeping it in a better position.
    • Day 36 (16 Dec 25) - continued the exaggerated left foot weight shift trigger adding some easy low flighted pitches with the 5h and a few putting style bump and runs with the 5h as well.
    • Day 442 - 2025-12-16 Got some swings in at an indoor academy a little south of Erie.
    • Has anyone played the new Maxfli forged irons? For the first time in I don't know how many years, they have come out with new clubs. From what I read, Maxfli was bought by Taylor Made a long time ago which then took all of their ball making technology and patents in order to get into that market. The club business was left to whither and the reorganized company, now a part of Dicks / Golfworks / Maltby, is producing these new clubs. (Their Tour X balls which I play are really good.) Anyway, I tried them both out at Golf Galaxy. There's a player's distance iron (XC-3) and a blade (XC-2) and both feel really, really nice, almost "Mizuno-like" in their soft buttery feel and they're a bargain at $800 for a set. I'm planning to ditch my Titleist's and want to go back to a forged iron. I almost pulled the trigger on the Mizuno Pro-245's last summer, but a damaged tendon sheath in my finger combined with a back injury messed up my golf game so I held off. Now the Pro-245's are no longer available, soon to be replaced by the MX-15. (At twice the price of the Maxfli's...that's what got my attention in the first place.) If anyone has played with the new Maxfli's or just tried them out like I did, let me know what you think.
    • Day 126 12-16 Back swing and rotation work today. Didn't hit any balls. Focusing on rotating and getting to lead side.
