Cleaning out a bookshelf I came across "The Golfer's Bible" by Frank Kenyon Allen, Tom LoPresti, Dale Mead, Barbara Romack which was published in 1968.  They have a whole section at the back with tips on how to correct some of our bad golf habits, for example:

Corrections for Topping the Ball!
1.  Stand closer to the ball
2.  Keep head still throughout the swing. Keep eye on the ball.
3.  Concentrate on swinging smoothly, not on looking up to see where the ball goes.
4.  Don't stiffen or lock right knee on the backswing.
5.  Make sure the weight has shifted to the right leg during the backswing, but be sure to
shift full weight to the left foot on the downswing.
6.  Don't try to lift the ball into the air with body action, or a flick of the wrists.
What do you think?  Are these all the same today?  Have we added anything to these suggestions since 1968?

Head still is key, but shifting the weight to the right leg (RH player) on the backswing brings quite a bit of timing into the swing which will make it more difficult to have consistent contact

A little different wording, but it sounds alot like the 5 keys this site promotes! I'd say yeah, all still valid.

I also picked #5 as perhaps not having as much credibility these days.  That damn piece of advice of putting weight on the right leg cost me over a decade of crummy/mediocre golf before I discovered and instilled my own version of S&T..;

I'm right there with you. After you having done it for years, it's hard to get rid of the bad habits that you have gotten into by compensating for that move too...in my experience anyway.

You know, that is still the last thing going through my mind on every single swing: 'head still, keep the weight forward'

It feels almost like a reverse pivot, but pictures and vids show that it's not.

It's definitely not IMO.  If it was, the weight would be returning to the back leg no on the follow through, no?

No it's not a RP, but it just feels like the first half of the RP because I spent so many years transferring the weight to the back foot. You know, that collapsing of the left side that RPers do? And no, I definitely don't switch the weight to the rear on the downswing. I found that with the S&T, I feel like I drive off the inside of my right foot, and that powers everything else.

I think we may have gotten a bit sidetracked from the original question....sorry OP

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
