I was recently fitted for a set of Mizuno MP-59's, but held off on ordering them from the factory with the custom fitting.  I have a $500 credit on amazon.com and found that I can by a standard set of MP-59's there, thus saving a bunch a money.

My question:  Is there a difference between the custom order from Mizuno and buying a standard set and having them reshafted to what I was going to order from Mizuno?  Is there a weighting difference/advantage that the factory construct provides?

Thanks.

I was just fitted for a set of MP-53s and ordered them through Golftec from Mizuno. My opinion is do it that way. I'm 6'7" with an upright swing and a low ball flight, so I needed an extra inch and a half in the shafts as well as 1* upright lies and 2* weak lofts. I'd much rather have Mizuno make the club that way than buy them off Amazon, pay to have extensions put in (that, in my experience, will break off within two years), pay to have them re-gripped, pay to have them bent, and pay to have the lofts adjusted. Not to mention, by the time you buy the right shafts and have them put in, you're probably going to be spending more than you would through Mizuno.

Let the fitters know you have a $500 Amazon credit and are considering going that way, and see if they knock it down some. My buddy has Tiger's VR TW blades; he found them online new for $499, went to test-drive them at a golf store, and when he told the guy that's why he was there, he told him he'd match the price. Can't hurt to try.

I loved those MP-59s. I hit them a touch farther than the 53s and just as consistently, but I liked how high I hit the 53s. I really don't need to hit a 6-iron 235, so I decided the launch angle was going to be the determining factor.

I'm not going left or right of those trees, ok? I'm going over those trees...with a little draw.

As long as the re-shafting is done properly there wouldn't be any disadvantage to the factory product, they could well be better.  But you likely will spend as much or more doing it that way.

I don't know what exactly you were fitted to but I noticed 3balls is one of the sellers on Amazon that has MP-59's.  They get a lot of sets through and they may have, or will come across a used set that's already built to your specs.  Might be worth an email to them.

I would call Mizuno and see what they can do on fitting you with the irons. You'd have to get a really good deal on the MP59s to make reshafting (by a third party, I'm assuming) worth the cost. Third-party reshafting could run $300+, so I fear you'd lose money overall in bypassing Mizuno. (And maybe mess up the warranty. Check on this)

Also, what is the condition of the MP59 set? Is it authentic?

A $500 Amazon.com credit could probably be leveraged better on non-golf items.

    • I've shot 91-74 on the same day before. Couple of years ago played a two round tournament on Bethpage Black. I shot 72 in the first round and 90 in the second. First round I played very well. Second round I played okay, but had about 5 shots that hit the lips of bunkers and bounced down into them. A couple of those wound up in footprints - I was unamused - and I failed to get them out. Anyway - lots of bunkers and my bunker play isn't great and then add a couple of footprints and me getting pretty tired and it added up to a lot.  Only you can really tell though what's causing the variance. It might be that your swing is very timing dependent and when it's timed well you play well and when it's not then it goes all over the place. In that case, some lessons and working on your swing could be the key. If it's more that you tend to feel like you hit it fairly consistently, but you have days where the shots come off and days where they don't, then that's more likely a course management issue. If that's what you need to work on, then you could read Lowest Score Wins and build a plan of attack based on that.  Rest assured though that a pretty big range from high to low is fairly common. Even PGA Tour players often have 18-20 shot spreads from best to worst rounds in a season. It's a common affliction among golfers.
