I am fairly new to golf and have been using my grandfather's "vintage" golf clubs. I will be playing golf most days of the week for a class this semester (isn't college great!) So I would like to get a good set of clubs that will really help me improve my game over the semester. And a set that I can gradually build off of in the future. Anyways I have narrowed it down to two sets, but please if you have another set you think is a better option please let me know.

Here are the sets:

Adams A7OS integrated club set (I like that they use clubs that are actually sold outside of the set)

http://www.rockbottomgolf.com/adams-golf-a7os-integrated-complete-set-with-bag.html

Callaway Warbird set (I mean its Callaway it has to be on the list)

http://www.rockbottomgolf.com/callaway-golf-warbird-14-piece-complete-set-with-bag-graphite.html

Thanks for the help!

Glad to be part of the forum!

From the looks of it, the Callaway irons look like X20s, which are good irons. The driver/woods seems to be a little outdated.

If you don't mind the look of the Adams irons, I'd probably go with that, as the driver/woods seem more current.

My 2 cents.

I can vouch for the adams a7os irons.  They take a little getting used to if you are accustomed to hitting older irons (because they are kind of bulky), but if you get a halfway decent hit on them they will at least go up in the air and towards the target.  Good strikes do not have to be directly on the center of the club for maximum distance and accuracy, although you will still lose 15-20 yards if you have poor contact.  The 5 hybrid in this set is the easiest club I have ever hit with.  If I am not feeling confident I can do 1/3 of a backswing with that 5H and it will loft up nicely for a straight-lined 150 yards.

I'd probably go with the Adams - a nice set for less money.

I am going to go with the adams. People seems to say nothing but good things about the clubs and everything they have put in the set seems to have won an award for something. The callaways seem to be older clubs that they are just trying to sell what is left of them. Thank y'all for convincing me.

I bought the A7OS set from Rock Bottom last week and they arrived in 2 days.  Everything in the bag looks great and packaged nicely.  Hopefully I'll be able to hit these since I haven't played much golf in my life.

Come on you are a college kid and should be smarter than that. Just kidding everyone has to start some place. Buy neither. Buy clubs that are a few years old on eBay or Craigslist at a deep discount. They are several things in one. Cheaper, top of the line if you want, disposable/rejectable due to low investment, experimental as you work out your preferences and needs etc, etc.

I have bought a lot of clubs that I was certain I was going to need/use/keep that have long since found other homes. I will very seldom buy new unless I simply cannot get them used.

The putter will be the first to be tossed then the Driver.

That being said - Callaway

I would strongly advise against doing this, or other online buys. You are new to golf, and therefore don't know a lot about golf clubs yet. If you get a "good deal" up front but don't like the clubs, or they don't fit, golf won't be much fun.

I suggest locating a golf shop and working with them to find a set of clubs you like. Ask golfing friends for advice on a good shop. Clubfitters can give you a static fitting. This basic fitting makes sure the club shafts are about the right length for you, have the proper lie angle, and proper grip thickness. Fitters can also estimate what flex shaft you need.

Test hit the Adams and Callaway Warbird clubs and see if you like them. This especially goes for the hybrids. Some players can't hit hybrid A, but do well hitting hybrid B. Friends who have gotten boxed sets either love or hate the stock hybrids.

IF you like the clubs in one of these boxed sets, they would carry you through your early seasons - maybe even to graduation. With a boxed set, you fill your bag and go play. You don't need to know a lot about golf club design in the early going. Then, after your swing stablilizes, you might consider a custom fitting.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

To be honest, I'd avoid integrated sets (i.e. boxed sets) . You can piece together one yourself from the same manufacturer though.

Use Adams as an example:

Adams tight lies irons.

Fairway wood:

Wedges:

Putter - not an Adams, but an all time classic!!

Maybe so, but once he melts down his Grandpa's pewter soldiers and pours them into the cavity he'll be knocking down flags!!!!

After all the advise (often at opposite ends and contradictory) the truth is that he would probably develop, prosper, excel and prevail by using his grandfathers clubs.   There have been pro players that got to be pros by learning using only a 5 iron.
