So Sunday I went and played a local course: Arrowcreek Country Club in Reno, Nevada. On the range just next to me is a father and his teenage son warming up, which I think nothing of while I go ahead and warm up. I then notice how pure both of them are hitting every shot, so I take a closer look. It's Chris DiMarco and his son!!! Just as I realized this, they were off on their round, so I didn't get to shake his hand or anything. Come the end of the round the guy tells us there is a bunch of pros up on the range getting ready for the Reno-Tahoe Open that is this week. So freaking cool... :P

So the question of this post is: Have you ever just run into a pro before? Did you recognize him/her right away?

Thats really cool. To bad you didn't get to meet him, but then again he's with his kid and probably doesn't want to be bothered.

Many years ago, I was playing the Hombre Golf Club in Panama City Beach, Fl. After our round we went up and sat at the bar to have a few beers. Then Hubert Green came in and sat down next us. Very nice guy!

I've run into Tom Watson on a couple of occasions, literally!  About 20 years ago, I was walking into Arthur Bryant's BBQ, as I turned the corner we about knocked each other down.  Then about 3 years ago I was walking around at a home improvement show and not paying attention and almost ran into his wife!  I never spoke to him just kind of nodded, just to let him know I recognized him but wasn't about to intrude on his personal time.

I've met a few pros, but the biggest...hmm...disagreement I've ever had with a pro was with Fulton Allem. He was playing in Memphis and I ran into him at the hotel bar where he and his caddy were staying. They were both pretty lit up. They had some pretty radical racial views as a result of being from South Africa. Very much a segregationist at the time, though his opinion may have since changed. The incident was during the early 90's when apartheid was still strong.

I have seen Kevin Na practicing at a course i play at sometimes (earlier this year before the slow play controversy).

Didnt want to bother him so i just let him do his thing.  Was nice to watch a pro swing in person.  Crisp iron shots.

No, but my older daughter has been in Stewart Cink's backyard.  She lives in Sugarloaf with her mother and they went on a tour of outdoor living spaces a couple of year's ago.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
