I just moved to Oxford England for two years, as part of my mothers job, and, as a green fresh beginner (2 months of playing) with a small set, where should I get a membership.

Things I would like

-18 hole course

-nice golf shop like pro shop

-ok club house

-cheap membership

-intermediate course (i don't wanna do terribly)

-beginner area

-driving range

-9 hole course included (optional)

-I live in Summertown, and I want a place that I'm able to walk to, so within 2-3 miles, with the execption of the Southfield golf course

Thank you,

Sadert302

ps. what is a handicapped index?

Which is the course where you used to be able to get a membership for 7 guineas if attending the University back in the day?  I played there a couple times in the 70s and boy did I hack but it's a nice enough course.  There's a dogleg left par 4 to an elevated green that was my nemesis every time.  It didn't help that a couple of my college friends could actually play the game ....

All I can say is that I wish that I'd taken the game more seriously as a young chap.  More power to you.

    • Jim Furyk To Get Tough To Win Ryder Cup Back | Golf Monthly Jim Furyk says he will pick the "toughest" and "grittiest" players he can as he looks to solve the "glaring problem" preventing the USA from winning the Ryder Cup Yea, I am not a fan of the toughness talk. I do think the idea of closers might matter more. Tiger Woods, probably had the most grit of any player in history, has a losing record at the Ryder Cup. He was just not good in team formats.  I do think US needs to fix their team formats. It seems to be a historical problem. Do people over in Europe grow up playing team format golf more often? I don't get why they tend to succeed in that format. I am not sure it is a toughness question. I think toughness matters more in singles matches, where you are on your own island having to win.
