Has anyone tried his style of ball set up, with it right around the inside of the left heel for every club? I tried it today and it worked pretty well, except for that fade I am still trying to get rid of. I'm thinking of making this my normal set up. Thought?

Yes, I use a similar setup for my stock shot.  But if I want to hit a lower trajectory - due to wind - I'll move the ball back in my stance.  And if I want to hit it higher, I'll move it a little more forward.

But for the most part - I play everything (minus my driver and fairway wood) off the inside of my left foot.  My driver and fairway wood - is further up ~ 0.5" - closer to my left toe.

The new GolfDigest has a feature on a similar strategy, where the ball and the left heel keep the same relationship...but depending on the club, the right foot separation varies.

I learned this as the 'modern standard' and thought it still was. I guess with all this talk of 'controlling trajectory' they've got the short irons further back again?

Left heel for everything is still a slightly different ball position relative to center if you narrow down for shorter clubs.

Left heel may work better for a more upright swing like Jack and all the people he influenced directly.

  • 1 year later...

Looking for more constant ball set up rather then having ball placement all over the place.

check out Nicklaus explanation of why he likes the ball inside the left heel

I tried it but just cant do it. However I do agree if I have to agree if I have to far back tend to go over the top, and if I have the ball to far forward then I tend to slide and lose power into the shot.

I have tighten my ball position to range  just inside my left foot to middle of the stance.

occasionally to left heel or slightly back of center for special shots only.
