Hey guys I've just started to get into golf in the last 3 months and I have totally fallen in love with it. I find myself wanting to play and get to the driving range as much as possible. I find myself shooting in the high 90s or lows 100s when i get to play a full 18.I wanted to post my swing and see if you guys had any suggestions or advice that could help me. As a note I just changed from an interlock grip to a 10 finger grip (which I'm using in this video) which has really helped my ball striking consistency. Thanks in advanced for any help it is greatly appreciated. http://swingreader.com/video/view/okbpLrb2/sw I think this was an 8i by the way.. Thanks again, Andrew

Hi andrew! Many of your issues depend on your backswing now. These positions or alignments in the backswing we call A2, when shaft is parallell to the ground. A3 when leading arm is parallell to the ground and a4 at the top of the backswing. You don't have to get these positions perfectly( and they vary some between pro's) to play good golf but if your closer to them it will get lot easier both to get distance and more consistent contact.

A2(If A2 is good A3 and A4 will be much easier to get better):

1.  Your left arm from the shoulder down to elbow should more in contact with the body.

2. The right arm should be aiming more straight away from the ball and not in to the ground.

Swingthoughts that worked for me to get a better A2 is get the upperhand away from me(back from ball and away from body) and get lower hand and elbow closer to body. Still haven't got it quite where I want so maybe you shouldn't listen to that.

A3. 1. The right arm is parallell but your almost in A4.

A4. 1. The elbow is too far away from the body.

2. The leading arm is higher then the shoulder plane.

Videos:

(It's not exactly how I want my backswing to be but it helped me understand some parts.)

(Good one.)

Hope it helps some and that I didn't confuse you too much.

Nevrino makes some excellent points.  And I'd agree with them.  Work on the takeaway - hands/arms/shoulder/torso/hips/legs... As you start nailing A2... Then go to A3.  As you start nailing A3.  Go to A4.  It is a process.  You gotta get those pieces and then add the others.  Once you get to A4.  And you are on plane and square.  You can hit some great golf shots.

So before you start worrying about adding more pieces - or finding what else is wrong or could be improved with your swing.  Focus on what Nevrino hits on.  Work on it for several days/weeks.  Then re-film your swing.  Come back and re-upload it.  And then we'll add more comments and feedback.

This isn't a boat race.  It takes time to improve and you gotta really focus on the smaller incremental steps.  And build on those.

Thank you both for all the feedback. Nervino thanks for taking the time to really dissect the swing and give back so much good information. After studying the frames you selected and watching the videos I think I need to focus on the initial backswing (A2), as you suggested, and try to get my right arm more across my body while keeping my left elbow in. I will go to the driving range tonight and work on it and let you all know how it goes.

Thanks again,

Andrew

Remember to keep your left arm straight. And right elbow/tricep close to the torso/side/body at A2.  Should be easy to learn as the move is very simple.

    • A sand trap is not supposed to have 3 inches of water in it. To me that’s temporary, casual water. Just like if your ball lands in a deep rain puddle in the middle of the fairway. I would have gladly hit out of any spot in that bunker. I understand that it’s a different rule. I just think it’s a dumb rule. You are penalized because it rained.  Here’s what I think is the dumbest rule in golf, and all sports for that matter - professionals playing for millions of dollars in a tournament have to carry around a little pencil and scorecard to keep their score and sign it, when there are big scoreboards all over the course and on tv. Can you imagine the Knicks losing because they didn’t count their score correctly? Like I said, I love the game, but it’s time to move into the 21st century already.
    • Sorry to lose you, thx for letting us know
    • I have to bow out for the weekend. I was only in for Saturday as it was
    • Could course committee have an MLR option to declare this bunker GUR?
    • Sorry, I will disagree. You got a penalty because you hit it somewhere and didn't want to play it from there. Bunkers are not the general area. If you had hit it into temporary water in the general area, you'd be entitled to relief. You hit it into a hazard, a bunker. Why should you get free relief when you hit it into a bunker? If someone else hit it into a different part of the bunker, without water, they'd not get a drop for free out of the bunker. Heck, it'd cost them two strokes if they didn't have an ACC and wanted to drop it out of the bunker.
