I'm hoping someone who has experience with being overweight and learning the golf swing can help me.

My wife is my age (45).  Never played the game before, but she's trying to learn.  She gained a lot of weight (distributed all over) years ago and wants to lose it which is one of the reasons she wants to learn golf.  She's 5'7, about 220 if it helps you understand that we're not talking about a 350 pound person.

Not sure the most elegant way to say this, so I'll be blunt.  She's got the address down.  Backswing is difficult because the left boob gets in the way of the left arm (DDs...so you don't have to ask).  I doubt she'd let me post her swing video on here, but if I can talk her into it I'll do that.

Here's the question:  Are there any modifications to the golf swing that make it easier for an overweight person to groove that optimal swing?  She's about halfway through Ben Hogan's "Five Lessons" and doing well so far, but if there's anything she can do a little differently in order to help this learning experience go smoother I'm quite sure she'd appreciate the advice.

So, any other fat golfers out there?  :-)

Thanks in advance!

Geez you're going to be in trouble when you get home!!! Fat golfer!!!Is there a dog kennel at your place?ha ha!

OK, I reckon the swing I'm learning at the moment would suit your wife and any other "big girls" out there. The main difference between what I'm trying to do and the traditional swing is the bent front arm. So instead of keeping a stiff front arm and then a shoulder turn all I do is bend the front arm to about 90 degrees, a little shoulder turn, till the front hand is a close to the rear shoulder as is possible and then a push down and back with the rear arm to the ball.

Go to Jack Kuykendalls sites for ALL the info.

I think Jacks swing would be awesome for ladies as it removes the need for a strong front wrist, a strong shoulder turn, and all the other gumff that traditional golf teachers like to complicate the game with. But for ladies with larger chests I reckon it'd be good because of the bent front arm. Cheers

Taking the above advice may lead to destruction of your golf game. Laughing at it may reduce stress.

Use the upright swing and not the around golf swing.Do the two plane swing with no sideways movement of the arms.  Simply lift the arms hands club unit straight up as you  turn and face away from the target then reverse to hit the ball

If that don't work then try the one plane swing except do it as a 3/4 swing. That is to say all body and no arm circular movement.

Awesome, I'll check out all of it and tell my wife I found the information online.

What...like I'm going to show her this thread?  I may be a little odd at times but I'm not insane!  :-)

Thanks guys.

Any other tips are appreciated!

    • Day 232 4-8 Rotation work tonight. Used just a mirror for the most part. Recorded a few swings just to see where I am.
    • Day 31 (8 Apr 26) - Worked with a coupe of kids on the school golf team on the range - then joined them for a few holes of practice play.
    • I’m sure you know his practice schedule 🤣 also, he had a wrist injury recently.
    • I’m going to go out on a limb and say that maybe if Jason spent less time on his clothes and more on golf he would win more.
    • So, my league starts next week, and I have a golf trip in two weeks. I am thinking no matter what I do, I will have to do my left leg and downswing turning piece. At least this turning piece helps me negate shanking the shot.  I probably shanked the foam ball about 10x in a row yesterday. Given, I was doing downswing work with not much caring about the body rotation. I was struggling to feel the same thing from two days ago. Where I was able to feel the arm piece and the turning piece working together. Yesterday, my body turn was just destroying my arms down piece.  That said, it’s not like I have a great feel for where the club is in space. Especially with how fast the downswing is. If I do the arms downswing piece with the turn piece better. I just feel those two things. Then after I am going into the finish I am like, "Oh, that was center of the clubface". I am glad the clubface found the ball. Maybe that is normal when you are trying to fix your mechanics. You are so hyper focused on the hitting the swing feel that the feel for the club is just gone.  I’ve watched YouTube videos where they talk about how correct lower-body mechanics give you the feeling of having tons of time in the downswing. I’m like, BS! there is no time. If anything, it feels faster now. 🤣 I do notice that the clubface stays more open past impact, less flippy. Not like I am trying to do that. Actually, with the downswing arm piece, I am trying to feel like I am rolling my wrist (closing the club a bit more).
