An amateur golfer wants to play in a golf event with a first prize of $10,000 USD

Does he sign a waver to give up his amateur status before the event in the event that he comes first and wins the prize?

If so how long must he lose his amateur status for if he receives the prize?

Anyone been in this position before?

Feedback needed....

Don't quote me here, but I believe that as soon as the amateur accepts the $10,000 he gives up his am status and it would take a year of playing as an am to get it back.
