I was browsing though some articles yesterday and found one that was fairly old.  It was a list of the tour's most controversial players.  That kind of got me thinking about today's game and the new faces as well as some situations with the vets on tour.

Let's say top 10.....who would be included in your top 10 most controversial faces of golf list?  They don't have to be players. They can be announcers, teachers, etc....

I'm not sure how we define controversial in the context of golf.

Tiger Woods is of course controversial. Many intensely dislike him but no one can resist talking about him.

Johnny Miller is outspoken.

I guess Ricky Fowler is controversial due to his wardrobe.

Rory Sabbatini can be controversial.

Ian Poulter speaks his mind.

Ernie Els has made pointed comments this year but in general is not at all controversial.

David Feherty can be controversial.

Overall, golf is a pretty tame sport and most of it's figures are rather bland.

Controversial could be comments about fellow players, tempers on the course, always in the news (not in a good way) off the course, etc....

For instance,

Tiger for the obvious recent reasons

John Daly for all of his drinking and gambling off the course

Garcia for his temper on the course

Pat perez for his temper

Johnny Miller as you stated

Stevie Willims

Hank Haney

Kellie Tilghman for the Tiger comment

Garrigus....

There is quite a bit of controversy surrounding such a "bland" list of players.

No - ignorant spectators have been quick to think that someone who gives honest answers at press conferences is arrogant.

Which he can be, but not for the reasons that most people think.

Agree. Colin is honest and frank. And US galleries have been quite hostile to him over the years.

The replacing of the ball in the Far East (Indonisea - I think) is controversial and continues to be so.

What isn't controversial is his commentery and analysis - happy to talk about himself - think Gary Player but without the Majors to back it up - insightful analysis/critiscm of another pro not a chance.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
