Price check for my first set

Hey guys,

I am totally a beginner. I am looking to purchase first set of golf so i can practice at driving range and come across this seller on craigslist. He is selling the whole set for 100 dollar. I am wondering what you guys think. I am planning to spend 100 - 300 for my first set,cheaper is always better ;P. If you guys have any other recomandation please let me know.

I avoid CL like the plague. I also wouldn't spend $10, let alone $100 on those.

You can find some great deals on Craigslist, IMO. I personally haven't bought anything but I do keep an eye out on stuff. You can buy some good name brand stuff off of http://www.3balls.com/ .  Why buy knock offs/off brands when you can get some "used" name brand clubs in good shape? You can probably get a good used set for around your $300 budget! There are a few other legit sites that sell used clubs as well. Try Dallas golf, Edwin Watts and Golfsmith for used clubs as well.

You might consider a boxed set of clubs. Maxfli, TopFlite, Adams and others make the combinations.

As LBlack cautioned, stay away from Craigslist.

Find a local golf shop and tell them you need a starter's set. You want to hit the clubs in person to make sure they're OK for you.

I would suggest you get a basic static fitting. The clubfitter makes sure the shafts are the right length for you, that the lie angle (angle clubhead rests on ground) is OK, and the grip the right thickness for your hands.

A couple of years down the road - once your swing stabilizes - you can consider an upgrade.

I bought a set of used clubs from Roger Dunn, who have affiliated stores in northern ca. Cost me less than $100 for a set of worn but high quality irons. I would test them out on the launch monitor before buying. Find out your length and swing speed. If you can't swing consistently enough, you can buy a single used club like a pitching wedge or 9 iron and practice with that until you develop a simple swing that is consistent enough to "fit" your first set of clubs. Get someone in the store to measure your length before getting the practice club. I had to outfit 4 people in the last two years, and my right hand side set three weeks ago. Cheaper is better, and can be done. You also have the choice to purchase demo clubs and old brand new model clubs, but these are in the $300 To $400 range for a set of decent irons.

Do you know any fairly decent golfers? Ask them for recommendations on good clubfitters. Don't automatically assume that custom club shop fitters are better than golf chain fitters - you find good and bad fitters in both venues. That's why you should ask around.

As for money, you can get a decent boxed set starting at about $300. If you piece together a bag of used clubs, it could run you a little more.

I am also a beginner and I purchased my first set of clubs from someone on craigslist and had no trouble at all.  I made sure I priced out each club individually as though I were buying it from the store and as if I was buying them off ebay to make sure I was getting a good deal.  I ended up paying 475" for everything that follows.

Driver- Ping G-15 10.5Degree Draw

3-wood- Ping G-10 draw

Hybrid - Ping G-10

Irons - Ping I-10 4-PW green dot

Wedge - Cleveland CG-12 56 Degree

Putter - Odyssey White Hot #1

various other balls/brushes/towels and other stuff.

Everyhting was in mint condition and I feel as though I got a good deal.  475 may be a little more than you are willing to spend but I check craiglist fairly often thier is always something around that price range in my area (Baltimore Md).
