What do you make of these minute cracks on the surface of a new Razr X driver?

Purchased secondhand but unused Razr X driver. After one session on the range I noticed these minute hairline cracks. I took the club into the pro shop and was told it was only cracks on the "finish" of the driver head. The finish will eventually wear off - I'm not sure if this is at all true. My well used Cobra S9 driver (also in black) has a ton of pitt marks etc from use, but nothing resembling the cracks on the Razr X. Does anyone have any insight/experience with this? Many thanks.

I heard back from a Callaway rep who confirms this is a defect and should not happen. Will follow up now with CS.


Whatever the outer coating is(clear coat?) has cracked from impact with the ball. It's not the metal that has cracked. The black paint on the RBZ 3 wood I had did that. Purely cosmetic, but...

Purely assumption on my part with your club but I'd have the manufacturer in on it just in case.

Bingo.  I have the same exact results on my RBZ 3W.

I don't know much about Driver construction, but the clear coat seems like a strange idea. After one session at the range I get 3-4 noticeable cracks, imagine what it would look like after 6 months!

Callaway is looking at it now.

Bud, it is normal as we have seen it occur with other OEM clubs as mentioned in this thread. When people buy golf clubs, and you hit a ball roughly 100mph +/-... Why do people think that the club will show no marking?

When you play basketball with a ball on an outdoor court... It gets scuffs on it... Are you sending it back to Wilson?

Or when a bat gets a knick in it from taking batting practice... Are you sending it back to Easton?

    • Rule 1.2b refers you to a section in the Committee Procedures (Section 5I) that helps explain what a Code of Conduct may (and may not) do.  Defining acceptable behavior (including smoking) and applying Stroke of DQ penalties are certainly within the Committee's authority. That Code of Conduct certainly should be available, either in written form or in a webpage accessible to all.  It may not show up on the "standard local rules" for an organization, the "hard card", as it sounds like its a policy of this particular golf course. Assuming that's the case it should show up on the Notice to Players for this particular event.  If you can't find it, ask someone, send an email, try to find out.   In summary, yes the Committee can DQ (or withdraw) a Player for smoking, even before or between rounds.  But its up to you to go from there, communication is the key here.

    • Hmm... I not sure I completely understand. If the course has a no smoking policy, then he shouldn't smoke at the course.  I'm assuming since you are aware of the policy, it must be written down somewhere.  As far as getting disqualified from the tournament, I would think that would be up to the committee. But it feels like it is within their power to disqualify, so why take the chance?
