set wrists early or let them set nearer the top of the backswing?

Hello everybody,

The modern take on this in my opinion is an early set ting of the wrists. The swing model  of the PGA is more inclined to create an early wrist set, but many old masters set much later than the standard model suggests. I would really appreciate a discussion on this?!!.

regards

I don't have a preference in my students. It's all whatever helps them maintain Key #4 (Diagonal Sweetspot Path). :)

Personally it depends. I have noticed lately that to get alot of check/backspin you can do this by waiting til the top to then let the wrists kind of flop at the last second while then starting the downswing, this kind of compresses the wrist angle and whips the club through... But make sure your grip is also looser than normal.

thanks for your input, Its nice to hear another teacher say that it does'nt matter, too many these days are too convinced in early setting i believe. The more i learn the more i am convinced everyones individuality requires a different take on the golf swing. Some get the early set n turn while others prefer turn n set. Of course as you can see from my profile image i am a Hogan fan, Mo norman of all people has a swing method i admire and both amonst many others in that era keep their wrists(actively) out of their full swings at points where these days the model advocated seems? increasingly to suggest to students that they should make sure they set their wrists early. Granted it won't be put that way but the students will pick the concept of the swing in that way

The subject fascinates me, i am once again thankful for your reply and invite any other thoughts on the subject. Regards Stephen

I am quite proficient in both methods, but i want simply to get a feel for what other people think. Hogan is my idol as is tiger. Hogan really studied the baseball swing to improve his shitty "younger swing" it was so over the top, something i battled with myself when i was younger. And on my tired shots still creeps in from time to time. How do you swing at the momment then and why??

    • I agree with @dennyjones, a suspension of some meaningful duration would be better than getting bounced from the Tour. They might consider experimenting each week. It might generate a bit of interest. I like the idea of a visible shot clock. If a player and their caddy can’t decide on a strategy and pull the trigger in XX seconds (30? 45? 60?), one stroke penalty. Give each player 2 resets a round. The clock starts when the last player to hit’s ball stops moving. Other pace ideas could be used every couple events until a consensus is reached to adopt or ditch an idea.
