I played at a very short but extremely tight course when I first started playing golf. Unless your driver was dead straight off of the tee or you worked it properly depending on the hole, your ball would end up in a creek or in a forest. Therefore, all I hit was 3 iron off of the tee. I even picked up a driving iron that I could crush. However, this impacted my game in a very bad way.

Whenever I went to another course that required a driver, I was then unable to ever hit driver. I had to resort to being 30-40 yds behind everyone. I really didn't hit driver until I picked up a 460 cc driver.

I doubt I would ever carry a 1, 2, or 3 iron again. My current set is 4-gw and I supplement that with 2 hybrids. One a 24 degree and the other a 19 degree. The 19 degree serves me pretty well and gets me on a lot of par 5's in my area in two.

I still prefer to hit irons out of the rough though. I may hit the hybrid but only if it has a really fluffy lie.

didn't lee trevino (or some other witty golfer of yesteryear) say,
"when there's lightning, i hold up my 1-iron, because only god can hit a 1-iron?"

for me the same thing goes for a 2-iron, and even a 3-iron.

I replaced my 3 and 4 irons with hybrids. I've found the forgiveness to be worth it. IMO, there's no reason not to take advantage of the technology if it works for you.

I think it all depends on how much distance you require. My hybrid 4 iron goes much further than my regular 4 iron. I usually use the hybrid from 200-210.

I have never hit fairway woods very well. I think the two hybrids play better to my strengths as opposed to hitting a 3 wood or a 5 wood from the fairway.

you know ive really thought about carrying a 2 iron instead of a 5 wood and i think ill make a switch to the hybrid. im carrying a 5 iron hybrid for no reason just because it was given to me, but i absoultley destroy it out of the rough. im one of those guys who would much rather hit an iron then a wood, only bceause of the feel.

Personally I use a 22 degree Cobra Baffler multimetal. I still hit a 3 iron though. I like to use the baffler off the tee more (actually if im not hitting driver and its not a par 3 im hitting the baffler). I can put it out 235 straight everytime... so I only pull my Callaway out maybe 3 times a round. Smart golf is good golf.

Plus, this multimetal is sick for skilled shots, knock down, stingers all the junk shots you REALLY encounter in a round

I replaced my 5 wood, 3iron/7wood, and 4 iron a few years ago with hybrids. My previous set of irons I only purchased 5-PW.

I purchased a new set of irons earlier this year. I ordered a 3 and 4 iron this time. And I am going to get a 2 iron later this year.

85% of the time I play with all 3 hybrids, 10% of the time, I will drop the 2 hybrid, and carry the 4 iron or 3 iron depending the course. And every once in a while, I will drop 2 of my hybrids and carry both my 3 and 4.

This year has been a crazy wind year, which is why I have probably carried my 3 and 4 iron more often. My hybrids definitely have a higher launch which is nice most of the time, but into 30-40 mph, it really sucks. Any spin on the ball and it just goes sideways.

Shoot one of my best rounds this year was in 40 mph winds and I was carrying my 3 iron in the bag. It saved me quite a few times into the wind.

And I finally played a course recently where I really wish I had had a 2 iron. I would have actually dropped my driver, and carried a 3 wood, 2 iron-4 iron, a 3 hybrid, and 5 iron-pw (plus gw and lw). It was just one of those courses.

I am trying more and more to plan out my plan of attack ahead of time and make sure I carry the right clubs to match my game plan/the course. It does seem to be working because I have dropped 3 strokes from my handicap these last 6 months.

I tend to hit a pull hook with my hybrid, 3i goes straight 95% even on mishits. Trying to hit an elivated green from 200+ and stop the ball I tend to reach for th e hybrid, 3i is best off the tee.

Voted hybrid as well. The 3i from my current set has not seen the light of day. It came out of the box and went right into the "Bag of misfit clubs". I've also never considered either a 2i or 5w because of how easy a hybrid is to use. If you look hard enough, the right hybrid is out there, regardless of player type. I found mine in the HALO, and it's made the long game a hell of a lot more enjoyable to me. Nothing like addressing the ball and just KNOWING it's going to go where you want it to... Every time.

Like everyone always ends up saying: Find what works and stick with it. Hybrids are so popular because the long irons don't work for so many people.

I have finally made the switch from my MP-14 butter knife to the titleist 585.H

I've had a titleist 585h 19deg for about 3-4 months now. It effectively replaced the 2iron/5wood function in my bag...but I find it very difficult to hit. I often spray shots with it, either pushed or flat out sliced. About 4 years ago, I used to play a Golfsmith/Snake Eyes Quick Strike (1st generation) that was simly amazing. All I had to do was touch the back of the ball with something sorta resembling a swing and the ball flew off the face, straight and long. I can't seem to remember why I no longer have the club, but I've been sorely tempted to assemble a QS3 and replace the 585 with it.

I went to opposite way & picked up a TM 2 iron. I can't hit my hybrids with any consistency & certainly can't do anything with them in the rough, although I try to stay out on the fairway somehow the balls dont always listen.

I can hit the 2 iron pretty consistent & with little to no fade.
Besides I prefer the traditional look of a blade.

I am currently looking for a hybrid to fit in between my 15 degree Ping G5 Fairway Wood and my 3 iron. The two that I am looking at are the 16 degree Taylor Made Rescue Mid Hybrid with a regular flex graphite shaft and the 17 degree Nickent Genex 3DX Ironwood Hybrid with a regular flex graphite shaft (both of these clubs say that they replace a 2 iron). I am just wondering if the Taylor Made will be too similar to my Ping 3 wood and if there would be much of a difference between a 16 and 17 degree hybrid.

Count me in the can't hit hybrids column. Irons setup more naturally for me and I find most hybrids go to high for the windy days

My miss is typically a slight pull and these clubs (and a 5-wood to some degree) tend to exaggerate that tendency for me

Good luck to those who benefit from this technology

I test hit the adams idea pro yesterday the 2h i think it was 18 degrees of loft, had the Aldila VS Proto shaft (amazing shaft) and could actually hit it pretty well, I had a lower flight than the other hybrids I had hit (although I hadn't tried the 3dx with a V2 might have a low flight too), I liked it a lot better than a 5 wood, going to try it again this weekend to see if it stays easy to hit. Probably wont replace the 2 iron in the wind though. If I pick it up only time will see.

whats a 2 iron?

i have 2 hybrids for good reason. i cannot hit my 3 very well and the 4 only slightly better but i can smoke my 21* like 230 and my 24* 210.

why try to hit an iron (poorly) that far when i can carry the hybrids which are easier to hit higher, better out of the long stuff, and much more consistent. the lowest iron in my bag is 5 !!

I love my PT.585 as it reacts like an Iron when you need to hit high, low, left and right shots, but has the forgiveness of a 460cc driver. They are also heaps easier to use out of the long stuff than a bladed 2 iron. I have never liked 5 woods so that factor didn't affect my choice.

    • No one should measure a joint mobility away from that joint. If you go to physical therapy, they are not measuring your knee mobility based on your midline. It is based at the joint. Shoulder mobility should be measured in reference to the shoulder joint.
    • He's using a driver swing, while I used the iron swing. Bryson goes from about 65° B to 15° B, hence the 50°. If you bend your right elbow, you're going to pull your hands across your chest some. Conversely, if you abduct your right arm and hold onto a grip with your left arm, you can see how extending the right elbow as we do in the golf swing during the downswing will "pull" the right shoulder/humerus forward (adducting it, as going from 65° to 15° of abduction is). Even people who pull their right shoulder WAY too far around them eventually get it "back in front" when their right arm/elbow extends. So, such a motion shows up as shoulder adduction even though the movement that causes it is just widening the trail elbow. The left hand on the grip almost "pulls" the hands forward as the left arm can't stretch much (there's some shoulder protraction, but that's almost maxed out at P4). Oh, I downloaded it and watched it (and commented there) before he blocked me. It's what led to him posting the comment in the "update" above. 😄  Single shoulder range of 75°, and that's going out well into the follow-through. 50° Max range up to impact. Manavian's video is bad. He keeps saying "midline" which is just a horrible way to look at it. He also kept saying that the club was moving that amount — also wrong. Adding left and right together is really freaking dumb. Another golf instructor said "That's like saying the player has 100 degrees of knee bend (adding left knee bend to right knee bend) 🤦‍♂️" (similar to what the biomechanist said about squatting). Also, see my post above about elbow bend. That's why Plummer’s alignment stick demo is so intellectually dishonest. A golfer can't get anywhere near that position on the left with his left hand on the alignment stick (quoted below).
    • That makes no sense at all.  so, I watched that Instagram. Here is a summary...  Bryson.... Address: Trail Shoulder 0 degrees adduction. P4: Trail Shoulder 65-deg abduction. Impact: Right shoulder 15-deg abduction. P9: 10 degrees adduction. Rory... Address: Trail Shoulder 16 degrees adduction. P4: Trail Shoulder 26 degrees abduction. Impact: Right shoulder 0 degrees abduction.  P9: 18 degrees of adduction.  DJ... Address: Trail Shoulder 4 degrees adduction. P4: Trail Shoulder 42 degrees abduction. Impact: Right shoulder 2 degrees abduction.  P9: 15 degrees of adduction.  Their point is that arm doesn't stay on the trail side. That the arms have to get across the chest from P4 to P9. I mean they do. What matters is the rate of which it happens relative to the position of the swing. The trail shoulder at P9 is not abducted a lot. The range of that total abduction movement is like 40 to 70 degrees. Bryson might be an outlier. Rory might be an outlier as well.  A couple of points.  1. None of them had any adduction at impact. So, this tells me the trail arms stays on the trail side of the body at impact. Is it moving towards lead shoulder, yes. It doesn't happen till post impact. The right side of the body is moving towards the target, so the arms don't have to as much as people think.  2. Trail shoulder adduction from Impact to P9 is 18 to 25 degrees.  3. P9 adduction of the trail shoulder is only about 2 to 12 degrees more adducted than at address. The arms/hands stay in front of the chest a long-time post impact. If Rory, from his address position just rotated his body towards the target and raised up his arms so he is at P9. He basically didn't have to move his trail arm further across his chest than where he started at address. Visualize that for a bit. I bet for people who tend to stall and drag their arms across their body to hit the ball, that would emphasize how much the arms stay in front of the body and how much you have to turn.
    • Do you know how Manavian is measuring his shoulder adduction-abduction that purports to demonstrate 50 degrees or motion in Bryson's downswing? I know the broader biomechanics research/scientific literature on this suggests shoulder adduction-abduction is only a modest contributor of force generation in the downswing, so I'm definitely not convinced by anything he's arguing, I'm just curious how different people can be claiming to use ostensibly the same "data" to tell a much different story.
    • I have an update… I don't have much of a response, because the fact that they would ADD the numbers for the lead and trail shoulder together… I mean, wow. I was giving them too much credit. Nobody would think to assume they were doing THAT. That's beyond comical. One of the biomechanists I talked to put it this way: "So if I squatted down and went from 180 to 90 deg knee angle, then I would say 180 deg range of motion because I have two knees?" I'd type more (maybe), but honestly, I'm laughing a bit too hard. 🤣 Update: Mini Manavian blocked me on Instagram, so I cannot see his post showing Bryson with about 50° of range of motion (with a driver) from P4 to P7, and 75° only if you go out to the mid-follow-through. What a terrible loss for me. 😉
