I'd carry a 1-iron if I could I hit long irons higher than I probably should... When I started to carry a full set back about 13 years ago... (I was 8) I switched between a 4-wood and a 1-iron... I could hit the 1-iron with consistancy about 160 back then... The 1-iron I have now isn't in the bag but I pure it like 260... I haven't switched... though I do own a hybrid... Its a Cleveland Halo with 16* loft... I may never yank my two-iron out of the bag...

i've got a 18degree sonartec hybrid.

but i also have a 2 iron.

to be honest, i love the height i get from the hybrid. but, for me, i prefer keeping the 2 iron in the bag because i can get a bit control off the face of the 2-iron.

anyone agree?

I'm a 4 handicap and I play with hybrids...no reason that higher handicaps shouldn't as well. My uncle and I were discussing this weekend the lost art of the 1 iron and in reality, the old 1 and 2 irons were really the same loft as today's 3 and 4 irons. So, essentially, you get your set built to those specs and then carry the hybrid. Take out the 2 and 3, get a hybrid and an extra wedge to fill any gaps and you will save a bunch of strokes. Besides, how many times do you really get a 215 yard shot and pull it off compared to all the 125 yard and in shots?

good call. I guess it all boils down to...... personal preference, i may one day put my hybrid back into the bag. but i find my fairway wood works just as well on those big par 5's.

i have a 19 degree hybrid - i don't have much use for it except out of the rough - long par 4 or par 5 second shot. Though on a par 5 though if i can't reach the green i'll usually be hitting mid iron to lay-up.

Off the tee - it's usually the driver. If the hole is shorter it may be the 3-wood. If it's tight - it's the 3 iron. I would only use the hybrid off the tee (a longer tight hole) at home course.

When i bought my irons last year i nearly ordered the 2-iron but they cost a bomb and i said i'd wait and see what the 3-iron does. I would use the 3-iron off the tee to great effect quite a lot and rarely off the deck. So i'm going to think about getting the 2-iron to put in the bag for some courses (a lá Tiger) instead of the 3-iron and if there is a par 3 which requires a 3-iron, i'll use the 3-iron that day.

And i'm the same as marpr - i find i've more control off the tee with an iron. Perhaps i'm not concentrating as much with the hybrid - and a long iron demands a perfect strike.

The amount of times i'm hybrid distance from the green in the rough is about once every 3 rounds - not that i'm always on the fairway! The long courses I play require a 3 wood for 2nd shots on par 4's!

I use to carry a #2 Hybrid (16 deg) instead of a 3W. Now prefer 3W (better distance, lower trajectory in the wind, hit it straighter (use to pull the #2 hybrid at inopportune times), way better off the tee). Still carry #3 or #4 hybrid though and use them often rather than a 3 iron. Can create a bit of a gap between the last iron and first Hybrid though.

Hybrids- have gone thru 4 different ones, dunlop loco, Cleveland Hibore, TM Rescue Duals and recently the Ping G10s. All of them were great, only reason I let go of one is for "financial" purposes. The 19* TM and the 22* Ping G10 will stay with me for a long time. The TM was already customized to suit my game and the Ping G10 was a gift from a brother. I toyed awhile with the thought of buying a Iron on sale at a Nike store but after testing it couldn't get the hang of it.

I completely agree. My 9 wood and Hybrid take out any need for me to carry anything longer than a 5 iron. Not only is that a plus but I hit them much more consistent. Anything further than 190 and I already have 1 of 3 clubs to choose from and have already hit that same shot many times over.

I prefer 3 & 5 wood's myself but I have no issues with people using one as a 2-iron replacement. I see alot of people take out their 3-iron for one but I could never do that myself

I'd have to say, hybrid replacement is an excellent choice. Just had a 205 yard shot today and a large bunker covering the entire front side of the green. Carried it over everything and had it stop at the back of the green. I hit my 2 hybrid better than my 3 iron. The only reason I still carry a 3 iron is to hit long approach shots under trees and those long par 3s where you want the ball to stop. But a 2 iron is really unnecessary for most players; go with the 2 hybrid.

I have a 2 iron ...and today I put it on the practice squad, will not travel.

nothing like a wind chewing well struck 2 iron with great bite on the green...but i don't get paid to play, and it is 1 shot in 4.

The Hybrid gets it there with much more frequency, i always hope for a good kick!!

I'm a high handicapper. But even saying that would be stretching my ability...lol As a beginner, blades are horrid to hit, wind is my enemy and for some reason the earth seems to rise just milliseconds prior to my club-face striking the ball - causing a small crater. Nonetheless, my current strategy is learning to strike the ball well versus shaping the actual path. In doing so, hybrids really help out. The large face, heftier weight and longer shaft give that extra degree of forgiveness. Don't get me wrong, though - I believe that players that can use a 2-4 iron and shape their shots will be much better than someone who has only played on hybrids in that range. That is if the iron players would dedicate as much practice as they did in their lower irons into the hybrids. As for others like me, right now it just helps me keep up with the rest of the group on Sunday mornings (that is until I can strike better!)

BTW, I have a Nickent 17* and 23* 3DX hybrid (2 and 4) in my bag.

    • No one should measure a joint mobility away from that joint. If you go to physical therapy, they are not measuring your knee mobility based on your midline. It is based at the joint. Shoulder mobility should be measured in reference to the shoulder joint.
    • He's using a driver swing, while I used the iron swing. Bryson goes from about 65° B to 15° B, hence the 50°. If you bend your right elbow, you're going to pull your hands across your chest some. Conversely, if you abduct your right arm and hold onto a grip with your left arm, you can see how extending the right elbow as we do in the golf swing during the downswing will "pull" the right shoulder/humerus forward (adducting it, as going from 65° to 15° of abduction is). Even people who pull their right shoulder WAY too far around them eventually get it "back in front" when their right arm/elbow extends. So, such a motion shows up as shoulder adduction even though the movement that causes it is just widening the trail elbow. The left hand on the grip almost "pulls" the hands forward as the left arm can't stretch much (there's some shoulder protraction, but that's almost maxed out at P4). Oh, I downloaded it and watched it (and commented there) before he blocked me. It's what led to him posting the comment in the "update" above. 😄  Single shoulder range of 75°, and that's going out well into the follow-through. 50° Max range up to impact. Manavian's video is bad. He keeps saying "midline" which is just a horrible way to look at it. He also kept saying that the club was moving that amount — also wrong. Adding left and right together is really freaking dumb. Another golf instructor said "That's like saying the player has 100 degrees of knee bend (adding left knee bend to right knee bend) 🤦‍♂️" (similar to what the biomechanist said about squatting). Also, see my post above about elbow bend. That's why Plummer’s alignment stick demo is so intellectually dishonest. A golfer can't get anywhere near that position on the left with his left hand on the alignment stick (quoted below).
    • That makes no sense at all.  so, I watched that Instagram. Here is a summary...  Bryson.... Address: Trail Shoulder 0 degrees adduction. P4: Trail Shoulder 65-deg abduction. Impact: Right shoulder 15-deg abduction. P9: 10 degrees adduction. Rory... Address: Trail Shoulder 16 degrees adduction. P4: Trail Shoulder 26 degrees abduction. Impact: Right shoulder 0 degrees abduction.  P9: 18 degrees of adduction.  DJ... Address: Trail Shoulder 4 degrees adduction. P4: Trail Shoulder 42 degrees abduction. Impact: Right shoulder 2 degrees abduction.  P9: 15 degrees of adduction.  Their point is that arm doesn't stay on the trail side. That the arms have to get across the chest from P4 to P9. I mean they do. What matters is the rate of which it happens relative to the position of the swing. The trail shoulder at P9 is not abducted a lot. The range of that total abduction movement is like 40 to 70 degrees. Bryson might be an outlier. Rory might be an outlier as well.  A couple of points.  1. None of them had any adduction at impact. So, this tells me the trail arms stays on the trail side of the body at impact. Is it moving towards lead shoulder, yes. It doesn't happen till post impact. The right side of the body is moving towards the target, so the arms don't have to as much as people think.  2. Trail shoulder adduction from Impact to P9 is 18 to 25 degrees.  3. P9 adduction of the trail shoulder is only about 2 to 12 degrees more adducted than at address. The arms/hands stay in front of the chest a long-time post impact. If Rory, from his address position just rotated his body towards the target and raised up his arms so he is at P9. He basically didn't have to move his trail arm further across his chest than where he started at address. Visualize that for a bit. I bet for people who tend to stall and drag their arms across their body to hit the ball, that would emphasize how much the arms stay in front of the body and how much you have to turn.
    • Do you know how Manavian is measuring his shoulder adduction-abduction that purports to demonstrate 50 degrees or motion in Bryson's downswing? I know the broader biomechanics research/scientific literature on this suggests shoulder adduction-abduction is only a modest contributor of force generation in the downswing, so I'm definitely not convinced by anything he's arguing, I'm just curious how different people can be claiming to use ostensibly the same "data" to tell a much different story.
    • I have an update… I don't have much of a response, because the fact that they would ADD the numbers for the lead and trail shoulder together… I mean, wow. I was giving them too much credit. Nobody would think to assume they were doing THAT. That's beyond comical. One of the biomechanists I talked to put it this way: "So if I squatted down and went from 180 to 90 deg knee angle, then I would say 180 deg range of motion because I have two knees?" I'd type more (maybe), but honestly, I'm laughing a bit too hard. 🤣 Update: Mini Manavian blocked me on Instagram, so I cannot see his post showing Bryson with about 50° of range of motion (with a driver) from P4 to P7, and 75° only if you go out to the mid-follow-through. What a terrible loss for me. 😉
