Hello, I am new to the forum but have a little exposure to great golf course architecture. I have done some research on Seth Raynor and am curious which Seth Raynor courses anyone has played and their overall thoughts of them.

Nearly every Raynor course is private so I doubt many have been able to sample his work.

Played Country Club of Fairfield several times in the Southport section of Fairfield, Connecticut. Built on former onion farms near Long Island Sound, with one hole playing along the sound. Mostly flat and wide open, using the shore grasses and holding ponds in the area. Not long, but interesting and a treat to play. Several years ago they removed nearly every tree, and now it looks very links-like with the wind often in play. Not a lot of traps, but they certainly come into play. Exclusive country club in a very affluent area of town. Private, of course!

Why limit the discussion to Raynor, rather than discuss the trio of Macdonald, Raynor and Banks?

I've played the following Raynor designs:

Creek Club
Fishers Island
Mountain Lake
Southampton
Yale

Somerset Country Club in St. Paul Minnesota. One of my favorite courses anywhere. Somerset has both Redan (#4) and Biarritz (#12) design par 3's. Awesome course!

    • God I hate when golf can’t give me n+1 day of success. Drives me up the wall when my body is, FU! Im like, ok let’s check the vid. Yep too much turn, arms getting behind me. Ok, I work on that. Get the feel back for a shorter swing. Confirm with video. Then going back to arms down stuff.  Arms down, nope it’s hands out towards the ball. Oh, you get arms down better. Guess what, you don’t get to rotate and you hit 6 inches behind the ball. Yay!  Maybe I should have walked off the range and not wasted my time. I wish there was a body alert system when it’s going to a SOB for the day. 😭 OK rant over, I’ll be back at this tomorrow.

    • I mean there has to be some thought. For eg., something like 'soft knees and wrists' at set up and maybe a dynamic 'left arm to chin' as a trigger to start DS. I have these one or two anchor thoughts and have served me well. In fact, my wildest swings are the one where I have no thoughts or if I forget to walk thru my anchor thoughts. In contrast my best rounds are where I am consistent with the anchor thoughts.    OTOH, if I am running my entire half hour lesson (hypothetical) with some pro that I had last Saturday or whatever before every swing then I'm probably in trouble before I even get over the ball.
    • Two bits. Bit 1 The NCAA's appeal of Brendan Sorsby being granted a temporary injunction will not be heard until February, so there will be nothing to prevent Sorsby from playing the full season and potential CFP.  Bit 2 The Big Ten Conference will hold a meeting and is expected to ban all of its athletic programs from playing Texas Tech in the regular season. Georgia has done the same. The SEC will meet to consider a similar ban. Fellow Big 12 members TCU and Kansas State are spearheading a similar ban, but the conference charter might not allow it. Meanwhile, Big 12 athletic directors are meeting this week to explore what options the conference might have.
    • No, but I'm also in disagreement that golfers have no thoughts over the golf ball, and/or don't ever think I've met someone I truly believe is thinking nothing but "target" or something on most shots.
