Anyone here done this before? I just feel like the V1 has way too much movement off the driver and irons and want something a bit straiter. I have NO problem checking my irons/wedges, in fact i was spining a Pinnacle Gold today from 60 yards. I can check a Rock Flite XL with a 6i. My SS is ~100-105 with driver. Does this switch make sense?

a lot of people do it... a good friend of mine owns a local golf shop here in the boston area and while playing a round together he asked me if I thought I was getting a little too much spin off the tee. He hooked me up to his launch monitor at his shop and there it was, the prov1 spin rates were too high. made the switch to the x and its been great since.

Yea my drives were just balooning today, I hit a 250 yard drive that spun back for christs sake. When I pulled that pinnacle gold out I popped off a 270 yard drive.

The longest drive I had this year - a 330 yard bomb slightly downhill - was with a Top Rock XL-3000. It just went and went and went... but, yeah, I play the V1x because it has less spin. I swing at about 100mph with the driver. Now that we had a drought-busting rain, the greens can actually hold a wedge, and I'm finding I have no problem sticking even mid irons close to the pin and biting, even with the rocks I'm using.

(I use V1x for serious rounds, and something cheap for anything else. Prefer NXT Tour, but I rarely get those.)

Bottom line: Make the switch. You'll get more distance and still have plenty of spin.

It's important to note that Titleist recommends ball fitting from the green backwards. Find the ball that has the short-game performance you like, then go backwards. If you're spinning it too much from the driver, consider a different shaft, loft, or a minor swing change (a lot people hit down on their drivers when they shouldn't).

Eric, I used to have the exact same problem. When i played Prov1s, i would often spin my gap/sand wedges off green. I switched to the Callaway HX tour and feel like a have the best combo of distance control, spin rate for my steep/large large high spin swing. I'd definitely recommend playing a couple rounds with them.

But when I am aiming off the green to make up for my fade with a Pro V1 vs aiming a little left with V1x it seems that the V1x is a better choice.

Look, I'm just telling you what Titleist says and recommends. It's also something I tend to believe. If you're too stubborn or believe you know more than Titleist, by all means, ignore the advice. It's worth what you paid for it, I suppose.

I don't think you really read what I wrote. "Around the greens" doesn't mean your 7-iron approach shot - it means chipping, pitching, and putting. Then once you get that just how you like, you look at approach shots. Since 40% or whatever of your game is inside of 100 yards, though - and often more as your handicap goes up - the actual "around the greens" stuff means quite a bit more than you seem to be giving credit. In other words, perhaps your "fade" is more like a slice, and perhaps you could improve more by fixing the problem rather than slapping on a band-aid known as "a ball that spins less." Besides, plenty of pros play off the greens and move the ball back to the pin. K.J. Choi won today aiming at the trees on the left side of every fairway.

I switched from Pro V1 to V1x for the same reason...thought it had too much lateral movement off the tee and V1x seemed straighter and had enough backspin on the greens....no brainer for me....

I've taken your advice to heart, seriously. This is a few months in the making, not something I decided overnight. I am just not sure whether the added spin I am acheiving by using a Pro V1 is worth it. I actually prefer a ball to release more on chips. Putter is something I could care less about, if anything I like a firmer feel when putting. Wedge shots are unimportant because I have no problem stopping either V1 or V1x, although the "feel" of the V1 is better.

Almost all my worst holes are caused by poor driver play, I am a pretty good wedge player and chipper. Putting is streaky with me, but I rarely 3 putt.

I started playing ProV1s recently (switched from NXT Tour) and have had to keep the driver in the bag to compensate for the lateral movement off the tee. I'm actually scoring better overall, however, because I tend to fly the ball on chips further than I should and the increased spin helps to check it up. I'm going to try some V1x balls to see if I like them better.

I made the switch... I was a big Prov1 fan for a long time, but my swing speed got a lot faster and I was just spinning it too much. I switched to the prov1x and never looked back.

Well I just snuck out at lunch to play 9 holes at the local par 3 and what a difference! I love the V1x, it fits me better. I lost absolutely nothing on my short game, in fact I like the fact that it releases great off of chips. Putting was about the same, and iron play was butter soft just like the regular V1.

Only downside is these things TEAR UP easy, the ball I used on 9 holes looks like absolute hell right now.

Yea except for the fact that the Pro V1 spins considerably more on short pitch and chip shots...

i use both i really cant tell a difference.

When you're capable of spinning the ball as much as I do at times, you'd be glad you're not using a Pro V1 if it were to hit the green, spin backwards off the front end, down the hill and into a lake. But that's just me, I suppose.
