Hi.  I am in need of some good advice.  I have a Cleveland tour-action 588 56 degree U-Shaped groves wedge from about 1995 that I would like to replace.  I truly love this wedge, but I think it has surpased its useful life.

Any thoughts on what wedge currently in the market has the same look, feel, and weighting?  An obvious choice to me would be a new 588, but have they changed in the past 20 years?  Also, what "bounce" would be most similar to my old mid-90's model?

I purchased a Cleveland CG 15 wedge on super clearance at Dick's and it was a nightmare.  I hit all shots very fat -- the clubhead feels too heavey.

I am open to leave the 'cleveland' brand if you think something else feels more like my classic.

Thank you!

I tried the new 588s at a regional Demo Day in May. Really felt good.

The 56* came in bounces of 10, 14 and 16 degrees. I tried the 14-b and 16-b versions. You could really go after the ball, even on partial swings, without the club digging in. Slight cut shots took off like a Lob Wedge, but with more consistent distance.

Check out the 588 page: http://www.clevelandgolf.com/US_wedges.html

Equally nice is the Callaway Forged. The 56* comes in 11-degree bounce only. (Not as much model variety as in 588s). The Forged, however, has a C-grind sole, and gets the ball up well. Also, check out the Forged page:

I have a 60 degree 588 from 1996 and I am worried I will have to replace this coming year. However, I did buy a sand wedge recently (54-11) and after trying out the new 588 and the SM4 Vokey I went with the Vokey. You mentioned that weight is an issue so a Vokey may be out of the question (they are heavy) but to me it felt very similar to my 60 degree 588 and it had a much lower (IMO better) ball flight than the new 588 I tried. Good luck with your search.

    • It’s been a while since I’ve seen the word “golf” and the phrase “moment of truth” collide in the same sentence.
    • I used to have a 21 degree Ping 7 wood, but it spun a lot and tended to come up short if there was any headwind or quartering wind.  Replaced it with a 20* Adams Idea Pro Tour Prototype.  Great hybrid and there are still some out there on eBay for decent prices (I think Langer still bags two of them).
    • Wins the week before and files for divorce the same week. I’m not putting money on Rory.
    • Partial to the Golf Pride CP2 Pro.  Softer than a Tour Velvet and pretty durable (I play 5 times a week and they last a year or more with no issues).
    • Tiger Wood's Driver Clinic Got this on Twitter. Which then I found the video above.  Tiger asking Rory to hit that control cut. Rory talks a bit about how he likes to stand taller, so he doesn't feel like he can shallow it with the body. Tiger puts it in his words, staying on top of the ball. Which I presume for Tiger his feel for a cut. Even the PGA Tour players have their own ways to achieve similar shots and describe it with their own swing thoughts (feels). Good insight in how PGA Tour player's develop swing feels to produce the shot they want. Could be something as simple as a posture change.
