I need a new bag - desperately. I see bags are generally marketed as being part of one of two groups - cart bags, and carry bags. The carry bags are generally lightweight, have limited storage capacity, and usually have some sort of collapsible tripod stand. The cart bags are generally heavier, have enough storage capacity to pack the picnic hibachi and a 5 course picnic lunch in it (in addition to all your golf gear), and have no tripod stand to get in the way of strapping it onto a cart.

Here's my dilemma. I like to walk. However, I have two blown discs in my lower back and a blown disc in my lower neck that really prevent me from carrying anything of significant weight - especially for long distances. So I use a Sun Mountain V1 cart.

I guess my question is this- can the tripod stand be easily removed on modern carry bags? OR - does someone make a truly lightweight cart bag? I really like the idea of lightweight; don't need a tremendous amount of on-course storage capacity other than space to stow a couple bottles of water; and want a bag with full liner separators.

Your suggestions?

Thanks.

since you already have a Sun Mountain V1 just get a cart bag, regardless of the weight.
you aren't going to be walking without the cart anyway, due to your injury, and once the bag is mounted on the V1 the difference between 5-10 lbs would be hard to notice.

Sounds to me like you still want a carry-type bag. Any of the cart bags are likely to be heavier than what you'd want to pull or push on your cart over 18 holes. Besides, the legs can come in handy when you're at the range and most every bag I've seen has some sort of strap near the bottom that keeps the legs from popping out if you don't want them to.

I absolutely love this bag:

What's so great about it? The "standing strap". This rigid strap stays upright when you lay the bag on the ground in between shots. Therefore, you don't have to stoop to pick it up again (thereby stressing your lower back). Just grab the strap from a fully upright position and keep walking.

I'll throw a 3w, 4i, 6i, 8i, pw, sw & and putter in the bag and walk 9 or 18. Super lightweight. Even better is the price. I think I paid $24 at Golfsmith.

If your back really bothers you, and yet you enjoy walking, I would go with a nice cartbag and pick up a moonlite for the random rounds in which you'll carry. For the convenience, it's almost too cheap not to have one.

Highly recommend it. Good luck!

I have an Ogio stand bag with the Schling thing. You could take that off, and you'd have a very lightweight bag that also has the advantage of a rubber band type thing that latches onto the cart (when you ride) to secure the bag very tightly. I almost like it more than an actual cart bag when I ride.

I have two bags I've settled on as my "gamers". When I walk, I am using a push cart but I also sometimes ride in a cart for tournaments or when it's realllly hot.

One bag is a hybrid bag, the Burton CXS. It's a very good bag for both cart and push cart use. It's not real heavy and has excellent club management and storage. It has a dual carry strap that tucks away in it's own pocket as well as stand legs that lock in the "closed" position for cart use. If I had to pick only one bag to use for every situation this would be the bag.

The other bag i recently got was the Ogio AMP cart bag. It's very light for a cart bag and works great on my push cart. It has the Woode club management system and has plenty of storage space. It was a steal for the money.

I thought about getting the Burton CSX Hybrid. I had two questions about it since I can't find a store that carries it. 1) Is there an insulated bottle and snack holder and 2) does the putter well work well with the clip. I would think that it gets to be a slight pain to drop the putter in the well and tuck it in the clip vs. just a longer well found other bags.

    • I caught a video on this driver; the face tech seems crazy. Looking at the heat map for ball speed, hitting it basically anywhere on the face only loses a few percent ball speed. The surprising and counter intuitive part to me was that for flat faced clubs, ball speed loss is directly proportional to distance loss. For clubs with bulge and roll this is apparently not true. The surprising part of that story being that the max distance potential looks to be a tiny pee sized area for this driver, and I feel in general for drivers. The counter intuitive part being (the myth?) that blade irons have a pee sized sweet spot and missing that tiny spot causes dramatic losses. And that modern drivers, maybe 2017 on, have massive sweet spots and are ultra forgiving. Where in reality, if this heat map data is valid and reliable, it might be a bit of the opposite. This insane tech driver appears to have a pea sized "sweet spot" while Mizuno Pro 241 irons are 28% more forgiving compared to the average of all clubs measured. Not compared to other players irons, compared to all clubs from all categories, players to SGI! The Pro 241 being essentially just a solid chunk of metal with no "tech" at all. Which for me devolves into a whole mess of what is forgiveness really? And in measurable and quantifiable results how many yards, or feet, does that translate into?
