Hi, Newbie here. wondering if anyone can help? :-)

I'm having real difficult flattening the shaft in my downswing so I'm coming over the top. I have early extension due to the steep shaft and just feel if I can get it on plane I'll get my ball striking where is should be. Been working on this for a long time. Although my issues maybe subtle, I think it's the subtlety that is making it difficult to progress. Here are a couple of videos from last week. I did go to the range today to try with a fuller shoulder turn but still had the same issues, can upload that too if it helps.

Help much appreciated!!

6 iron down the line

Have you tried getting a steeper shoulder turn? Not necessarily longer but as you get towards the top of your backswing, your shoulders currently flatten out.

With steeper shoulders, you'll find it easier to bring the club down on the inside.

Thanks for the response!

I have tried a steeper shoulder turn (and something my teacher is always trying to get me to do) but more often than not, end up dumping the club head in the ground behind the ball. I have a swing from a session where I managed a steeper shoulder turn and hit it well, but still managed to attack the ball with the same steep plane.

I don't see you coming over the top much... maybe a tiny bit but certainly not severely. That said I find the best way to flatten the shaft in the downswing is to focus on getting all the tension out of your arms. You really want the feeling of the arms being passive and "along for the ride."

If anything I'd say it looks like your swing is "all arms." I think you would benefit from a bigger shoulder turn and more active legs.

Just my 2 cents :)

    • Day 39: did top golf for an hour with the family. It was fun but also not really like real golf at all. Also did some mirror work - working on the backswing stuff mostly.
    • Day 4, 1/2/26.  Played 18 today;  didn't get a chance to warm up (had I known the range was closed, I'd have hit balls at home first).  Played okay, 92 with three balls in the water.  It was raining for more than half the round and I didn't quite appreciate before today just how much I benefit from roll on both drives and approach shots.  I did not adapt well to this change until about hole 15, which is something I have to figure out.
    • Day 143 1-2 Arch wrist in downswing. Having a SLIGHT cup in the lead wrist at the top now. Only paused swings with some rehearsals before swinging at ball.  Used foam ball.
    • Day 459 - 2026-01-02 Had two guys on GEARS Hybrid, so I hopped on afterward (I'm going to do this a lot more often now). So… I've signed myself up for another month of backswing work in two ways: A little more extension of the trail elbow (got into the upper 90s) Less pelvis turn (low 50s).
