I help run a golf society, its new, but we want to do things right.

We have just played an 18 hole winter season in brutal winds, and have calculated our handicaps using the Congu method with th buffer zone each week.

I finished the season with a handicap of 14

We have now started a mid week 9 hole summer season, alternating between north and south each week.

So last night we played the North 9

So for the 9 holes I started off a handicap of 7

another member in another group plays off 21 but for this 9 holes starts off a handicap of 10

Before anyone judges this, light rain no wind... perfect scoring conditions

We both hit as good as we have ever played.

I hit 2 over per for a -5 net =23 points stableford (all scored) so -0.3 x 5 off 14.2 = handicap 12.7 ? or is it doubled etc??

and the other guy hit a 4 over -6 net =24 points (all scored) so -0.4 x 6 off 21.2 = handicap 18.8 ? ????

I dilema as you can see is how do we calculate our weekly handicaps back up for the 18 holers we play at the weekend, and the opposite 9 the following week

Please help... I have heard allsort up to now...

What is your goal here? Are you trying to make play fair for 9 holes, then for 18, then for 9? Do you always play Stablefords? Are you looking for hybrid scoring to make things equitable? Are you wanting to use the scores that you use for Usga Handicaps? Please clarify.

In my country we use the EGA-system, Stableford. When you play 9 holes, the other 9 are counted as if you played your handicap. So 23 points for the front nine and 18 for the back nine (that you did not play) makes 41 points.

But.... it is not wise to do so. It is not too difficult to play +3 over 9 holes when your handicap is 11-15. But it is extremely difficult to play +6 over 18 when your handicap is 11-15.

When you have an EGA handicap of 11.4 or less it is not allowed to play only 9 holes for your handicap.

We would like to play using a correct and recognised handicap system. Our summer league is stableford, anf as mentiond before the alternate 9hole comp, but admittidly the two 9's are very diffrent. But we would like our handicaps as correct as possible to make a fair comp across the board. We then as a rule use the same handicaps when we play our 18 holers at the weekend in a variety of social and competetive formats. None of us are bandits, but we do like scoring well. But the goal for the majority is to get our handicsps down and be competitive off them.

Its worth mentioning that we use our stableford scores each week to calculate placings. Eg most points gets 10 points in a league. 2nd gets 9 points and so on. 35 scoring weeks later we have a winner. We also have a running total stableford points gained for the season as a seperate comp. Plus others. So accuracy of hsndicaps is essential.
