I've been Playing Golf for: 4 months

My current handicap index or average score is: +25

My typical ball flight is: Straight and then curves to the right

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Slice, I would like to have a more right to left ball flight.

Thanks for the help guys!

I'm not a great golfer by any means, so take what I say with a grain of salt. However, these are my observations.

It looks like your clubface is closed at the top of the backswing. If it remains closed at impact and you are still hitting a slice, then you must be swinging even more left than the club face is angled. This would cause the slice.

So you might try swinging "in to out" or to the right while remaining that closed club face and you will get either a draw or a hook. If it's a hook, then either straighten your club face out, or swing less to the right or less "in to out."

It also looks like you might be getting too steep on your downswing. A flatter swing plane promotes a draw flight path.

Additionally, your lower body may be getting ahead of your arms.

Everyone's goals are different so I'm not sure if you are looking for a techniquely correct swing or if you want a quick fix. But I think these are some general observations that might help you either way.

Thanks jboren,

Tried what you suggested about, more in to out and timing my upper and lower body. It worked! I'm now drawing the ball with the occasional slice when I lose focus. Thanks for your help!

That's another solid swing. Agreed, your clubface is closed at the top of your backswing. That should promote a hook, so why you're slicing seems counterintuitive. It has to be a timing thing. I'm leaning towards what jboren says in his last paragraph. I think your body may be getting too far ahead or your arms and the club. That could lead to an open face, even if it's closed at the top of your backswing.

Wow!!! Let me borrow that swing and I'll win our Saturday game every week.

Hard to tell from a down the line view but since your club head is coming from the inside with the face closed at the top the ball could be a few inches too far forward and the club could be wiping across it a little instead of going through it. Or, like the other guys said, you could be getting ahead of the ball. Fairly common for me to do that when I'm trying to kill the ball. Never creates a slice for me but it does give me some straight balls that miss a mile right.

Well actually after slowing it way down it just looks like the club does go through the ball without wiping across it so the guys must be right. Has to be that the club face just hasn't quite squared up at impact.

Thanks for the help and input everyone!

Also, I see you said you'd prefer a right to left ball flight, but there is a point where you should give up on finding a shape that is preferred, and playing what is natural for you, so make sure not to worry about that too much

Driver: 10.5* callaway Razr Hawk Tour - 350 yards(usually into the wind, it can be windy here. at least 400 with a little wind behind me)

Hybrids: 2 and 3 callaway Hybrid razr tour (312 and 287 respectively)

Irons: 3i-10i callaway forged standard length(278, 263, 250, 235, 221, 213, 201, 190)

Wedges: callaway jaws cc 52* 12 approach, 56* 16 sand, 60* 13 lob (0-185)

Odyssey Black tour #9 putter(5 ft, i'm always at least within 5 feet on my approach shot)

I wonder who on this forum is a PGA tour pro, disguised as a normal player..

2013: play in the US amateur qualifier

    • Is anyone going to be there?  I won a couple tickets for Saturday.  Likely spend a half day walking and watching.
    • Day 298 - 2025-07-25 Got some work in after a lesson at Whispering Woods. I hit one SPICY shot during the lesson, too, ha ha.
    • They need to mark it or declare it as such. Even just a thing on the back of the scorecard would do.
    • There are utilities buried along there. I did talk to the one of the course owners today and he said it was OB. When I mentioned "the committee" (USGA and R&A terminology) it didn't seem to register with him.
    • Have played 3 serts of 18 holes since Monday and last night added 6 holes but had to quit because it got dark on us.    My last time I shot a 56 on the front nine with 16 puts. I shot a 57 with 16 puts on the back 9.  I am ordering a 60* Pure Spin Wedge this Tuesday that I found on Ebay.  I am having trouble controlling my drives, but a lot of it is being nervous and still just starting to relax a little.  I am planning on playing Men's Senior this coming Tuesday.  It is definitely an adventure but so far it has been worth it.  My back pain (lower) is gone, and my leg cramps are almosrt gone.  My putting is improving.  Okay, Golfers: As of this morning, starting on January 1, 2025: Steps = 1,035,587 ; MIles = 472.14 ; Stairs = 1, 664 Not bad for a 78 year old golfer that is 5'10"and 150 pounds.  I will quit bragging for now and say a big "Thank You" for all your encouragement.  Will play a little more over the next few weeks and see if I can lower the score.  I even have a book: "Lowest Score Wins" by Erik J. Barzeski & David Wedzik; I think I have seen some strategies somewhere inside. 😄   Thanks,  Retired Old Man, Terry
