If you are lucky enough to get an invite to Merion in the next month (Actually, it has been in force since the fall), you will be told to carry one of these...

...and use it to place your ball if you are in the fairway.

Ummm ... spill the beans!  Did you get to play there??  More pics??

That's fascinating, and I guess means that the course will be PRISTINE come next month!

No, my cousin played there last week. We all knew it was going on (mats in the fairways) but he confirmed it.

I'll have some pictures from the practice rounds, but no cameras or phones after that. I'm hoping that my level of participation in working at the Open might get me an invite to play after the tournament.

Why not just close the course?  You can do just as much damage to the course by not repairing a pitch mark on the green.  I could see the tees, but fairways?  Meh.  Seems a little overkill.

Cool!  What are you doing?  Are you going to be a marshal?  (Don't get roped into being the walking rules official for Tiger's group, that can only end badly ;))

Well, they DO have a membership. And they are generally not too happy that the USGA has pretty much owned their property for some time now. The thing is, they have reciprocal agreements with most of the private clubs in the area and they could go on tour if they wish, but they are such snobs that they don't believe that other tracks are worthy.

Yes, I am a marshal captain. I will be the captain of a particular hole.

Nice! Thanks for sharing!!

It got me thinking... I play some pretty shitty muni's here in Socal.  And it is not uncommon to find myself in the middle of the fairway, but the ball laying in an unrepaired divot.  Maybe I should start carryingone of these around, and when I find myself in a crater... Just drop down the mat and place my ball?  I'm sure my playing partners won't care!

another option would be to just tee it up!

Quite from a friend who coincidently played there yesterday (I must have missed my invite. He was able to bring a foursome to a sponsors outing):

Mats on fairways and par 3 tees if you were hitting an iron. Not real golf....actually a bit easier because No Fat Shots!!!

Then maybe they shouldn't have invited the USGA to hold the national championship on their course.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
