Just wanted to share my experience getting fitted and see what the opinions are on my choice.  I went to a very well known golf shop in my area to get it done (one of the top 100 on this list http://www.golfdigest.com/golf-equipment/2013-05/100-best-clubfitters ) and I decided to pay for the advanced fitting where they were actually going to use technology to analyze my contact with the ball and everything.  They said it would cost $130 but if I made a purchase I would get $25 credit back.

I went in a little nervous and excited and it was a very hot day in Sacramento.  They did the club fitting in a little metal trailer/studio area out back and by the time I had hit about 50 balls I was absolutely drenched in sweat but I had a blast.  I told the fitter that I wanted some forgiving irons and I wanted to try all the popular brands.  My average score is in the 90s right now.

We started out with Ping G20's and they felt good right away.  Keep in mind this is the first time I'd hit a "good" brand of irons.  It was crazy how I could really feel like I didn't hit it straight but it wouldn't fly much off of center.  He informed me that they had just gone on sale for $550 as well.  We then compared them to a set by Adams, Cleveland, 2 sets by Cobra including the Amp Cells, and then a more expensive Taylormade set iron and a Callaway.  The club fitter told me that he only sees "1 out of 1000" people come in with my kind of power and club head speed.  I definitely think he was just BSing me a little bit to make me feel good and buy clubs. Either that or a lot of really bad players go get fitted at this place.  Is 90-95 mph club speed that crazy for a 7 iron?  My distance average was probably 165-175

After trying everything and analyzing the numbers he recommended either the Ping or the Adams set which was only $499 and came with a hybrid included.  He showed me a chart detailing where all my balls landed (pretty cool) and I saw the clusters closer together on those 2 clubs. Distance wasn't too different across the board although I was able to knock the Taylormade one about 180 consistently.

I ended up getting the Ping G20 5-9 irons and a gap wedge and a Ping i20 hybrid when it was all done.  +1/2" in length, extra stiff flex shafts.  They credited back my entire $130 fitting fee which was awesome.  I ended up spending about $650 for everything. Now I wait for them in the mail

Sorry for the long post but I am excited. Here are cliff notes

-Got fitted for irons

-Tried everything

-Ping G20's with extra stiff flex shafts were the winners

-I wait for them to arrive in the mail

-Got a good deal

-Anyone play with these clubs or know about them want to post opinions?

Pretty sweet deal.  I used to be in love with the G15's after demoing them more than a few times, I never pulled the trigger on them though.  Sounds like you got a good fitting, and if you have the swing speed for a X-Stiff shaft, which I assume you do since you got fitted, he wasn't completely BS'ing about the 1 in a 1000 thing.  It's probably more like 1 in a 100, but either way congrats!

The reasons I got the i20 hybrid over the G20:

-Mainly because he had me swing both and he liked my results with the i20 better

-He said the G20 irons were extremely popular but the i20 hybrid was better than the G20 in his opinion

Here's a picture of both, the i20 looks cooler

I told him I didn't want to go too crazy because I'm still modifying my swing here and there so we kept it close to standard on everything.  Grips only slightly enlarged, only +1/2", only a small change on the angle of the club face, etc.  The only major change was the x-stiff shafts.  He said it's not that uncommon for him to give the x-stiff shafts for younger players (i'm 24) and that he plays with them too. He took a swing in the simulator and showed me - we had almost the exact same swing speed with a 7 iron.

He kept saying that I could have hit anything because my swing was so good. I think this was part of him being a good salesman because it did make me feel good!  But I knew I was buying clubs anyway so it didn't really help him

95 mph with a 7i is SPEEDY.

As you work with a pro that fits you, I'm certain your distance will get more distanc-ier with the same swing speed.

I wouldn't say my average was 95 but more like 90-92.  I believe I can gain not only more distance but probably more club head speed once I work on a few things in my swing.  My swing video is also currently near the top of the "members swings" section

    • Day 24: did a stack session. Worked a bit on downswing feels during breaks.
    • Day 444 - 2025-12-18 Light day of hotel room work. GEARS Summit v2.0 today. Good day.
    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
