Nike Iron questions

I recently bought a new set of Nike Forged Irons. My previous set were 2010 Nike Slingshot Hybird Set.. My question is, I could hit my 7 slingshot iron a consistent 150 on the nose, with a junky ball spin if any at all. Found myself over the green because the ball would land dead center green, but no spin to keep it there. Now the forged irons that I've used 4 rounds now give me the spin I'm looking for but if I'd hit my 7 forged iron, I'm topping out at 130 yards or less. Do you stand at the ball differently, swing harder??? Before you say it, I'm a good to great iron shooter. I hit the sweet spot with both styled clubs very very consistently. A little help would be appreciated! Thanks

Given that your swing is consistant between the two clubs, I would just say the 7 iron is now my 130 yard club instead of 150 yards.  The difference might be the roll factor due to the difference in spin, But if losing distance really bothers you then I would consider a different shaft, or shaft flex.  What shaft and flex is in your old set verses your new set?

Slingshots were a Uniflex (factory). The blades are true temper dynamic golf reg flex

The slingshots and forged blades are two completely different classes of irons. The slingshots do give you a good amount of help with getting the ball in the air and getting a little extra distance. You don't really have that type of help when it comes to blades in general. You probably need a little more "oomph" in getting that type of yardage as well as strike it very well, which also involves more than just hitting it on the sweet spot. I'd post your swing if you can to see how you're achieving hitting the sweet spot.

I know they're are 2 different styles of clubs. Like I said, I'm not tooting my own horn here. I know very well how to strike an iron. Getting it in the air, absolutely no problem what so ever. I honestly played 4 rounds and had 1 bad shot, off to the left(I'm right handed) and I know what happened. The club turned when I hit the ball on a downhill slope. The ball was lower than my feet and when I hit ground it turned. Felt it in my hands and knew right away it was a terrible shot. Where would I post a video for someone to look at??

My best guess is that it's just the club. Slingshots give you the extra help to give your shot extra distance. With the blades, not so much.

Back to the first post about this. What is the typical yardage of a forged 7 iron. Am I far off hitting only 130 with this club. Or what I would guess it should be around 150+???

I personally play Mizuno JPX-825 Pro irons.  They have a forged clubhead, and I hit my 7 iron about 150 yards.  My 5 year old Mizuno MP57 irons which also have forged heads, I could only hit my 7 iron about 135-140 yards.

Thanks for the help fellas. I'm by no means changing up clubs now.. Maybe just need a few more rounds to dial them in to what I'm used to.. I am in all essence loving the feel compared to the older Slingshots. As soon as you strike the ball, you can feel if its going to be a good shot or not. With the Slingshots, they'd feel like junk coming off, but would end up being somewhat descent shots. But if I wanted to drop one on the green and expect back spin, it was never happening. I've already noticed quite a bit difference in the Vr pro II. Back spin I would never dream of with the Slingers!! But Thanks Again!

First off all i think it's weird if you hit perfect iron shots every time ( just one bad one ) and you have hdc index off 15.

If you hit 7 iron with slingshot 150 is that carry distance or with roll?

If i hit a bladed look 7 ( my mizuno mp 59 ) i hardly get any roll, i just get one hup forward and that's it.

I think the distance loss comes from the combination off shaft flex, club head, and maybe the ball you play.

Casted ( game improvement irons ) are normally a little lighter than forged bladed irons. maybe a lighter shaft would

give you some more distance. What i suggest you should do is get fitted. Bring your current slingshot with you and hit some balls with

that at first, the numbers will explain everything

Nowhere have I said I hit perfectly. And while your critiquing, I think the word that your trying to spell is "of" not "off" as you referred to. The 150 was carry distance, hence the bouncing over green with no spin. I also wrote a hdc of 15 because I don't know what my handicap is. I said I hit my iron shots almost perfect. Doesn't say anywhere that my driving is top notch, did it?? So thanks for the criticism, and trying to look beyond and lend an ear. Thanks

What kind of irons are they? Nike got more than one set of forged irons. Hard to tell without seeing your swing, but 130 yards with a 7 iron sounds like a poorly hit shot. Very low speed can be a reason, but since you hit the Slingshot 150 yards, it does sound like you're not hitting the sweet spot, which is smaller on those new clubs. Were you fit for the clubs and shafts?

The Slingshot 7 iron got 34º loft. The potential other clubs got 35º and 31º loft, depending on which model he's got. Which means there shouldn't be that big of a difference.

I'm going to jump back a little bit on this, but, what do you mean "typical yardage of a forged 7 iron".  Everyone hits their clubs a different distance.  I play forged Nikes as well and hit my PW 150.  Doesn't mean a PW is meant to go 150 yards, just what I hit it.

Damn, I always wondered why I can't hit my pitching wedge 200 yards like the pros can.  I thought there was something wrong with my clubs.  :)

There are always differences from player to player, but you can make some estimations based on swing speed and handicap. Most mid to high handicappers are not getting the distance out of their clubs due to a faulty swing. More forgiving irons will make them hit the ball closer to that optimal length. You'd have to see the swing hands-on, or maybe with video, to make some estimation as to whether the length he's getting is reasonable.

Everyone can hit their clubs the same distance as the pros, it just requires a helpful wind and a long concrete path to make the ball bounce!
