Dumb question

I started playing again after 15 years of not playing. I purchased a set of Taylormade burner 2.0 irons. I noticed almost immediately that these irons hit much much longer than I used to hit years ago. I'm not talking by a little but a LOT longer. Are all manufacturers making their irons with stronger loft's? This may sound weird but I'm not sure if I like hitting irons that are traveling 20 yards longer than I'm used to. Does that sound crazy on my part? I'm actually considering another iron set unless that's just how it is now. I'm currently considering Ping or titleist what do you all think about how I'm feeling?

Depending on how old they are, yeah, pretty much everything nowadays is stronger.  Some less so than others.  I think, in general, the more "blade-like" players irons are closest to "traditional" lofts, and the more game improvement-y irons are the stronger-est (if you will).

This seems like the perfect place for me to post these pictures I took yesterday.

This first one is simply a picture of two identical length clubs ...

And this next one shows what they are.  One is my current sand wedge (54.5*) and the other is my dad's old 6-iron.  His 6-IRON!!!  (From the early 1970's, I'm guessing)  I will also try and find out the loft of that club for comparison.

Then maybe I won't bother hitting other clubs and just get used to the new distances. I played Callaway big Bertha's in the 90's I think they were the 1995 model. Now I have Taylormade burner 2.0. Just seems such a huge change. I will say they are very forgiving clubs.

You know you could always have the clubs bent to the lofts you want.  The other thing to remember, though, is that it's just a number.  My old clubs (late '90s Titleists) were 3-9,PW.  The 3 iron went 210 on a good shot, the PW 130.  My new clubs are 4I through 9I, PW, UW.  My 4 iron goes 210, my UW goes 130.  Basically, due to clubs being stronger lofts, longer, and fit to me, nothing has changed except the number just went up one on each club.  I could white out the 4 and put a 3, if I wanted to, but what's the point?

Full disclosure:  I left out the part about my clubs being +1" or so because I'm 6-3, but regardless, it's still a 6 iron. :)

Most manufacturers are not only making stronger lofts, but also increasing the lengths. A lot of the GI and SGI irons are playing like that now so you'll definitely see a huge improvement in distance compared to 15 years ago.

wow I couldn't believe the distances with say a pitching wedge I played with my Dad it was my first time in 15 years and had to hit one less club than I used to hit for any given distance so an old 9 iron shot was now an easy pitching wedge if I gave a pitching wedge a full swing it was still too long I had to back off a little for my pitching wedge to hit about the same as my old 9 iron shots.

I guess I'm ok just have to get used the distances you are right it's just a number and I do like how easy these irons are to hit now if I could get my driver and 3 wood under control lol

      Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.

      I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.

      I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
