I'm starting to really enjoy urethane-covered balls lately... I just played my best 9 holes ever (42) with a found Bridgestone B-330 RX. Unfortunately, a dozen urethane balls are usually as expensive as a greens fee.

But I just popped into the local Sports Authority, and they've got boxes of Penta TP Practice balls on clearance for $15... $15 for a dozen new[ish] urethane balls? That's hard to pass up.

I have a $10 off $50 coupon too. So might just buy 3 boxes (plus some other crap i need) and effectively get 36 for $35.

I've never played the Penta but... it'll be hard for someone to talk me down from this deal...

If they are the TM Penta TP5 Practice balls, grab a few boxes. My local PGA Tour Superstore was running that deal a few weeks ago. They were $14.99 / dozen and the entire pallet disappeared in one day. I grabbed 6 boxes of them. They are new btw, not "newish". Some have a small cosmetic blemish....I have a couple that were stamped 21 instead of 2 or 1. They are basically last years version of the Lethal, and a great ball. I've been playing them for weeks now.

Oh I'm aware they're new. The "-ish" was simply to imply some sort of minor imperfection in the manufacturing process, which I couldn't give two bowel movements about.

The boxes just say "Taylormade Penta TP practice." http://thesandtrap.com/products/taylormade-penta-tp-practice-ball . That's the product in question.

Unfortunately, i just found out that coupon won't work on clearance items. Dammit. I'll pick up at least one box though.

I was just at Golf Galaxy and found the TM Penta TP3 on sale for 19.98. They don't say practice and sales person said the normal price is about $35.00. I also had a coupon online but they would not honor it on the promotional price. I got it anyway.

Yeah, on the outside of the box they just say Penta TP Practice. But the balls should be stamped with Penta TP5. I've been playing them for weeks and notice no difference from the Lethal balls I was playing (at $45 per box) prior to finding these practice balls.

dunno,...mine were definitely marked TP3 and "new" on both the box and sleeve. The sales person did say they were last years model so maybe we are not talking about the same ball.  I hit a few outside on my home made chipping mat which is a Home Depot 1 x 2 Truline glued to a piece of plywood. Plush enough to hold a wooden tee and enough "give" to simulate a hit off real turf. All I can say is, that the "feel" of the ball is as good as I have ever experienced  when chipping (no tee of course). I think I am really going to enjoy them on the course. Can't comment on distance yet, but that is not all that important to me.

We are not talking about the same balls. You are talking about TM TP3 balls. We are talking about TM Penta TP5 practice balls.

Yah, I figured that out. I saw the comparison on another forum. Not that much difference between the two other than they claim the TP5 has less spin off the driver and supposedly the TP3 better close to the green. I doubt if many would discern the difference.

Okay... nice!

Despite the coupon debacle, I'm still excited. Maybe I'll splurge and get two boxes... $15 is still a steal. I get reward points anyway.

Update:

Now that I've actually opened the box [sigh...]

They are the five layer balls. While the outer box is quite ambiguous, the individual sleeves have a big "5" printed on them and say "five layers. zero compromises."

We shall see how they hit today... Wish me luck.

They are the real deal. I've been buying them for a long time, they're regularly sold for $19.99 normally. The other great thing is that I don't have to mark my ball, who else has PRACTICE stamped on their balls?

Update #2.

Well, didn't see this coming...

I was so excited to try the Penta today now that my previous box had been used. I was so happy to be playing a tour-level ball at a Top Flite price. Then about 11-12 holes went by, and I started to realize...

They were hurting my game.

They just didn't check up for me... at all. The best piece of evidence came when I pured an 8-iron beautifully onto the front of an uphill green. It's final resting place? The high rough on the far side. Then I thought back and realized I had rolled over at least 3 other greens on otherwise good shots.

At first I thought I was just playing poorly. But when I switched back to the aforementioned B330-RX, and starting sticking on greens again with consistency, I knew...

I am aware this is a subjective opinion... I just didn't like the way the ball played. Oh well.

Anyone wanna buy three sleeves of Penta TP'5s? :p

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
