My girlfriend wants to learn how to play golf.  She is 24 years old and very slight build (5' 2" tall, 110#).  I am looking for suggestions for a decent starter set of clubs to get her.  I don't want to spend a lot of money, as she wont be able to play very often and I dont know if she will keep at it.  Any suggestions?

At 5-foot-2, your girlfriend is on the borderline for petite women's clubs. Just as fashion designers make petite women clothes, golf OEMs make petite golf clubs. Women 5-foot-2 and under should consider petite clubs. Some of the models featuring petite versions include Wilson Tiara, Adams Square 2 Bliss, and Lady Edge Petite.

Petite clubs tend to have shafts an inch shorter, and a flatter lie for the clubs.

Here's a web site: http://www.all-about-lady-golf-clubs.com/lady-golf-club-petite.html

Take her to a golf shop and let her check out some of the women's clubs. If she could take a golf clinic first (often they will loan clubs to beginners), she'll know the basics of the swing and get a better idea of what clubs she liked. Or, she could take a couple of lessons and combine it with club-fitting.

She could get a beginner's boxed set: often it contains a high-loft driver, an FW, a hybrid, irons 7 - 9 - SW, and putter, with bag. But, a couple of lessons plus trying out clubs in the shop - or outdoors if possible - will give the best matchup.

As I said, get her a clinic or a couple of lessons. A sure way to turn a woman against to golf is to give her clubs, put her out on the course, and let her embarrass herself because she doesn't know what she's doing. And, resist any urge to teach her yourself. Golf lessons from significant others are hazardous to both golf and long-term relationships.

I'd pick up some Hireko clubs. Women generally get Driving Club,5w, 5hybrid or 7w, 7, 9, sw, putter. At Hireko.com you can order the individual clubs at whatevre length you want. The Belissima look like the go the obsession are glary pink On ebay there are lots of sets. I've seen many women using Wilson Hope and they are not very dear. They would be my pick of fully assembled sets.

Adams and Callaway make nice starter sets for women.  They have every other club.  This is what I got for my wife.  You can then get the other in between clubs as she gets better.

Id go to Wal-Mart or Target and get her a set of Wilson Hope clubs.  Theyre forgiving, easy to hit and PINK! LOL  If you want to spend a bit more, the Adams Finesse are really nice too.

    • I have trouble with vertigo on occasion, but have gotten nutritional and biofeedback tips to keep it at bay. Dehydration can help trigger v-like symptoms so one recommendation, along with maintaining overall hydration, is to start with 8 oz. of water early in the morning. A meta-analysis on Golf As Physical Activity indicated that golf is rated as a moderately intensive physical activity. This scientific literature review came from the University of Edinburgh. The physical activity level ties into hydration. A former university colleague was a marathon runner who had published a couple of articles on endurance training. He likewise said that golf was a moderate physical activity especially when the round stretched past  the two-hour mark. For hydration he recommended switching from water to electrolyte drink on the back nine (past two hour point of exercise) to prevent cramping. At the two-hour point of moderate activity, water starts flushing electrolytes out of the body, which can lead to fatigue and cramping. (I have had trouble with leg cramps in the past during exertion.) During a round, I start out with water on the front nine and switch to sports drink on the back nine. If the day is unusually hot, I may drink 8 oz. of Pedialite concentrate before going to the course. Maintaining overall hydration plus on-course boosters keeps me going.
    • Personally I’d try booking direct first - either via the Vidanta golf reservations number/email or through the resort concierge - especially for Christmas/New Year. Vidanta’s main courses (Greg Norman and Nicklaus designs) are popular and can book out fast this time of year, so direct often gives you the best shot at your preferred tee times.
