Haven't posted in a long time.  I have played well the past few years, got my handicap down around 5 or 6 and played pretty regularly, but recently, I lowered my swing plane more, made my hands deeper, etc.  I'm hitting all my clubs well, heck, I can pull out my driver and know for sure I'm going to hit it solid...  I'm hitting better than ever.

Here's the problem:

My two wedges, sand and lob, are incredibly unreliable.  I hit them shorter and often hit them poorly.  I hit my 3 iron around 200-210 yards now, and it's probably the most consistent club in my bag.  I went from hitting my 60º wedged 90 yards to about 65.  I feel like the club just slides under the ball, and it flops up into the air with no power at all.  Is this common, and is there a good, valid, scientific reason?

Ho. Lee. Smokes! Welcome back man!

There is a valid reason why that happens with the wedges and it's usually a combination of two factors: adding loft to the club face and hitting down too much, both of which will increase your spin loft -- which you can think of as a measure of the solidity of your strike.

Spin loft = Dynamic loft - Angle of Attack. Say you take your 60 degree wedge and flip it just a little bit so the actual loft that the ball "experiences" is 62 degrees and that you're hitting down, maybe, seven degrees -- because you're really trying to "trap it." Your spin loft is going to be 62 - (-7) = 69 degrees. Because the hit is so "oblique" (think of an underspin backhand in ping pong) you're transferring less energy into the ball for any given club head speed. Hence those high, fluttery shots that don't really go anywhere.

Stretch.

Shanks, welcome back!

This kind of happened to me a while back more with the 60 than the 54. The more I tried to get distance the less it happened. Then I tried what felt like a more relaxed 3/4 backswing and kept everything else the same (ball position, downswing, impact, follow through) and focused on solid impact. The distance came back. So now, when I have that licking my chops full wedge distance I try to feel that same motion (almost think easy back, easy down, and then get through impact to finish).. I believe in my case I was overswinging which caused me to lose my angles going into impact. Now my stock full 60 hits that 90 yards no problem and the 54 is right on at 105.

Not very scientific, but I hope it helps.

You're probably flipping at the ball, adding loft. You could also be adding bounce to, which would help you just slide under the ball if your hitting a little bit behind it.

Work on getting your left hand forward more at impact.

My hands are usually a few inches ahead of the ball at impact on video.  I tend to have a very long swing, parallel or past.  I'd have to check the videos of wedges specifically to see, but I hit every club high... really high.  I've never really lost distance because of it though.  I was hitting it lower, but I haven't really lost a single yard due to the change.

This was happening to me too, I realized I wasn't getting my hips through and was just spinning/turning them. When i shifted my left hip forward on the downswing i was able to get more shaft lean and compress the ball more. Went from hitting 100 yard 54 deg wedges to now 120 yard.

    • Has anyone played around with "My Strategy?"  It seems they've revamped it -- I remember not liking the interface a while ago.  Today I went over a course I play semi-often and was able to designate a tee box for each hole, then choose a a club and target direction and it put my scatter pattern for that club off the tee, showing average SG for fairway / rough / bunker (if appropriate) / green.  I could change the club and see how another behaved.  It wasn't clear to me what I can gain from this, or where the follow-up shot supposedly originates, but it is neat to look at it on a map. What motivated me is that I'm debating taking less than driver on one of the par-4s next time I play this course, probably 4-Wood.  I have found myself, sometimes off of a good tee shot, playing my second shot from the tree line, as the fairway slopes strong left to right.  I don't think I've even had a near-GIR on that hole in 2026 (6 rounds at this course), and it's my second-worst strokes-gained hole, playing to an average of 5.3 for me -- the only worse is a hole where I've hit an O.B. en route to a bogey and also managed a triple bogey another round. Scattering my 4W pattern off that tee shows a higher strokes gained, but then again, hitting that club is far from a guarantee I won't fade it a bit and roll into the tree line, now further back from the green.  And I haven't hit a bunted driver in a while, maybe I need to practice that shot, but that isn't something this feature can show (since it doesn't know why my tee shots ended up where they did).  Then again, it might not know where I was aiming for my tee shots either. On a related note, I am finding their course analysis tool interesting, especially when I can sort by strokes gained average and also determine which hole(s) I'm playing to what stroke average.  Interesting that the #2 and #4 handicap I'm averaging under bogey, while 5-6-7 and 12 handicap holes I'm averaging over bogey.  The hole I described a moment ago is the #12 handicap.
    • Day 28, June 1.  Went to a course near me while running errands to practice putting.  I wanted to chip also but their chipping green was closed. I did my 4' and 6' drills (around the clock, but with the goal of making each putt twice, for a total of 24 from each station).  On the 4' putts, I took a total of 32 putts to sink all 24.  I'm very happy with the 75% make rate (scratch one-putt at that distance is 80%, bogey 65%). For the 6' putts, I took a total of 52 putts, for a 46% make rate (scratch: 55%, bogey 39%).  That's an improvement I'm happy with, and I'm aiming to do this drill once a week for a while, now that my putting (over the past five rounds) is better than the 10 hcp baseline (I'm a 10.7? 10 point something as I type this), which is far better than 6-7 months ago when I was losing strokes to the 25 handicap baseline (I really should write up what I did to improve over this time).  Amazingly, on the 6', there was one putt (approximately coming from 10:00) that I didn't sink at all in 4-5 passes and then was the only coin remaining, and it was face up.  I could've sworn it would break right, and I kept missing it left, and when I finally aimed straight in, I made two in a row.  Maybe it was one of those rare (?) double-breaker 6' putts.
    • This is feeling like the club is at P2. To get lower launch angles I have to feel like I’m dragging my hands through impact just delofting the crap out of the club.  This is trying to stop at P2.5. The consistency in launch angle gets worse. Contact gets worse.   trying to go P3, things get more volatile. The more I increase my swing length the more I can’t lower the dynamic loft.  Edit: these are with my 56 degree.
