I think lamebums has done a good job of putting it into perspective.

Though for many new golfers the driver is the last club they should be trying to hit. Just about every teaching pro will say the game is best learned green to tee, not tee to green. While I see the wisdom in that, try to explain that to someone who can't hit a driver off that tee...

even with all the tech. the length of the driver shaft makes it hardest to hit squarely. There are days I simply can't hit it, and often i hit the 3W WAY better.

If you know you can hit your driver, do it. Otherwise, there is no 'shame' in hitting a fairway wood off the tee. Go with what works.

I agree with this and Lamebums as well. If you can hit it, hit it. There was a time when my 3w was not very accurate, so my driver was actually a better option for me because I had a good run where I was hitting it well..

Lately, I've been using the 3 wood more than ever due to some driver woes, and have just been crushing it (well, crush is a relative term, been hitting it 230-240 off the tee, which for me is crushing it). For the courses I usually play on which measure around 6500 yards sometimes less, 3w is plenty of club off the tee to leave yourself a reasonable 2nd shot on most holes...especially when your ball is in the fairway. Hitting some good tee shots with my 3wood also gives me confidence with my driver and I think I make some better swings. When the time comes to take the driver out I feel like my "long club" swing is grooved so to speak, assuming I hit some good 3 woods earlier in the round.

i was thinking about not using my driver for a while - because i couldnt get it past 190 yards- then i purchased a driver with a 13.5° loft - and i have been hitting this thing dead straight and anywhere between 230-250 yards...

    • Day 47: simulator day! Played St. Andrew’s and shot a +1. Not bad, especially with having to putt at this simulator set up. Had about 5 minutes at the end to work on some feels as well.
    • I think you're saying it's preposterous to think that the areas on this club are anything like what's shown here: 30mm toward the toe or heel loses only 5% distance? Highly, highly doubtful. So a guy who hits the ball there and normally hits the ball about 250… will hit it instead about 238. By missing the sweet spot by about 1.2 inches? Highly, highly doubtful. Heck, the high heel barely gets into the red, and orange is only "up to" 10%! @M2R, I've never heard of "Ask Golf Nut" but I'm dubious of his claims in the video and really, really dubious of what's on his site: "Why AskGolfNut Is the Most Trusted Data-Driven Golf Resource". Hmmmmmm.
