I'm 16 years old and have played a golf since I was about 12. I recently started playing a lot and want to try and become a touring pro in golf. I know I'm getting old and wondering if I really do have a chance to become a touring pro. I shoot about a 48 on 9 holes and aren't too good yet. I want to play on my high school team but I have been a lifetime football player and have won a Super Bowl. I don't know if I should play golf or football because I know golf is a game good for life and football is really only high school. Just want some suggestions on what I should do?

This topic has been covered MULTIPLE times.  I would recommend doing a few searches on this website and you will see pages of threads on topics very similar to this.

That being said, here is a little bit of reality for you.  At 16 you are already freshmen going into your sophomore year or a sophomore going into your junior year.  In most states, the top golfers at your age are already LOW single digit handicaps (4,5,6) and honestly probably only 1-50 of them will make it to the tour (that is purely a guess)

I am not saying it is impossible, people have taken up the game in their 20's and 30's and made it to the touring level.  So while, I won't say it's impossible, I will say it is VERY VERY unlikely that you will make it to the PGA.  Please don't be discouraged, golf is a great game, and if you keep playing now when you are young, you will find that it has value in the adult world, both in business as well as the plain escape from the every day stresses of life.

Additionally, Golf as a sport employs lots of people that are not touring professionals.  Teaching Pro's, club pro's, store managers, club managers, grounds keepers, etc.  You could find a very rewarding career in and around Golf that isn't being a touring professional.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

    • I've been Playing Golf for: 40 yrs My current handicap index or average score is: 4.0 factor My typical ball flight is: Straight however sometimes slight draw. The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: squirt to the right due to to much arm not enough turn. • The first issue Erik spoke about is something we worked on for my swing during both GEARS sessions. GEARS was showing my pelvis center moving towards the ball during the back swing. I wasn’t the 4” guy though! This forced me to correct on the downswing to give myself space. My hip rotation was to high as well. We corrected it by first getting the weight off my heels in my stance and getting my posture correct. Then the feel was shifting back into my right hip at a 45 degree angle. This kept my pelvis center from moving towards the ball at the start of the backswing. I also didn’t sway back as much as I felt I did because of the angle I was shifting. Feel Ain’t Real. The cool thing about GEARS is as you work on something you can see the exact (Real) change happening. On video, it is much harder to spot this issue because of the 2D nature of filming. But I know what to look for now. Sadly, I was hurt all last year and most of this year so I really haven’t been able to work on it much. I did do a lot of backswing work though.
