Hi, im new to this forum and im recently looking for a new set of clubs. Had my old ones for years and only played a few times a year. I want to get into the game more and would like a decent set of irons without having to pay a fortune. I had been looking at this set and was wondering what people thought of them? http://nevadabobs.co.uk/Golf-Clubs/I.../188prodid.asp

I know they are left handed ones listed on that site but id be looking for a right handed set. Dont know about any of the shaft types as its something ive only come across when ive been looking about a new set of clubs. I can hit a ball very far but ive a problem with hittin the ball with the toe of my club rather than the face of it. Dont know if any of that makes a difference but i just thought id mention it to provide as much info in the hope that someone can help me out. Thanks.

Your best bet would be to get fitted by a Pro and then demo as many sets as you can. Of course it sounds like cost may be a concern so you'll have to deduct from there.

Not sure what your looking to spend so its hard to advise you. Bottom line though is it comes down to what you feel most comfortable hitting.

Good luck!

How tall are you? Height could be one of the reason you're hitting off the toe. Another is your swing plane. You might want to have yourself fitted for the proper lie angle (more upright).

As far as for golf clubs, I've never been a fan of Nike's and I never will be. To me, Nike hasn't come close to creating "decent" golf clubs compared to Titleist, Mizuno, Callaway, TaylorMade, etc. For a beginner, I think NDS is good enough although I hate to say this. I don't know how much you're willing to spend on irons, but just try to find other irons out there because you might get better one with approximately the same budget. In determining the shaft type, you should be aware of your swing speed, although it's not the sole factor. There are many reason as of why someone prefers a certain type of shaft. Mostly is to match their swing type as to different shafts have different characteristics. But you don't need to worry all those things since you're just starting. I'm guessing for beginner, you definitely should use regular flexed shaft. As far as steel or graphite, you should google the advantages and disadvantages. It's just too much to explain in here. What NDS has to offer on that site is a good set of shafts (True Temper). Edit: I browsed the website for fun and I saw this Mizuno MX-19 for just a bit more than the NDS. I honestly think you should try it.

Titleist seems to have quite a following on this board

Anyone care to explain?

The two independent golf equipment testing companies I know don't have Titleist ranked up that high in terms of performance

Huh? You've not given me enough to respond to, like a link to the rankings or anything else.

Titleist makes clubs, in general, for lower handicappers. The reasoning could be something as simple as "the tests favor forgiving clubs." If you'd like to start a new thread with this topic, by all means, please do so. For now, here, let's get back to helping the OP with his question. To him, I suggest as others have done: go to a professional clubfitter and get his recommendations.

the 906f2 just won a golf magazine test for low handicappers fairway woods, but didn't do nearly as well in golf digest, prob. cause golf digest doesn't test for good ballstrikers.

Titleist Equipment on the PGA Tour in 2007:

Titleist Equipment on the PGA Tour in 2007:

Good point. But keep in mind many sponsorship relationships require usage of that company's equipment. You have Titleist as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in various categories up there. I would bet compared to other companies in number of golfers sponsored they are either 1, 2, or 3.

I think most golfers these days play equipment that suits them. It's been a long time since there's been a true "Payne Stewart" type story where he switches clubs for the money, hates them and plays badly, then switches back.

That's an interesting point. Know of any sources that back this up, i.e. golfers don't have to play their sponsor?

I know that 5-10 years ago Tiger definitely used Titleist irons. And now I believe he's exclusively using Nike clubs and balls and everything. I'm not sure how his Nike contracts have changed thru the years.

No, that's not quite what I'm saying. Most golfers these days aren't switching for the money - they're just making deals with the equipment manufacturers that make equipment they like.

Plus, I think there's less variation in quality and playability these days. In the old days most pros would play blades, and blades are pretty finicky. Today's players play cavity-back clubs, which are a bit less finicky. Manufacturing processes have improved, the science has improved, etc. Ernie switched from Titleist to Callaway without really missing a beat, etc. Then you also have a lot of the pros playing equipment that's really just built for them. Tiger plays a kind and shape of iron you can't really buy anywhere. But outside of that, Tiger's an exception to every rule. His Titleist irons and his Nike irons today are really just slightly tweaked versions of the Mizuno irons he had as an amateur. He was allowed to keep his old clubs (like his Titleist PT 3-wood and still his Scotty Cameron putter) as long as he wanted. I think he could still switch back if he wanted...

    • If you’ve been playing over sixty years that means you’re not as young as you used to be, welcome to the club. Most people I play with are 70+ and we all seem to have issues. Couple of the guys have had cancer, heart issues and strokes but still doing the best they can. But not what they used to. Some are where they probably should just play nine holes because at about fifteen they are starting to struggle quite a bit. My scores are creeping up each year, don’t like it but it’s better than sitting in the recliner. Good luck.
