LOL, that's pretty funny. I used to play golf with a guy who thought very highly of himself. But, unlike Jeff, he would just tell me how good he was after most of his shots. Or, if it was a bad shot he would explain why he hit a bad shot. Funny thing was he wasn't really all that good.

I'll do the occasional talk to the ball but I don't say much and seldom have anything nice to say If the shot looks good and I say anything at all it'll be something like "be good" and that's it.

I had to play with a guy that probably shouted "you can do it" in an Ahnold S. voice before just about every shot I made.

During a marathon round on Sunday, we got matched up with this guy on the front 9. Nice enough guy, and a pretty good player as well. But after pretty much every swing he would say "oh yeah, NICE swing!! OH....OH....here comes the draw, oh yeah baby."

as long as his talk wasn't directed toward you guys (like bragging I mean) I don't see anything wrong with it.....that may be his way of being confident in a shot or just his style of play....personally I would have had to be there to really understand but by just reading what you posted I wouldn't have been upset at all with it.

Or how about when a golfer reprimands himself in the third person.

"Bradley! You know you can't hit it there but you did it anyway."

I played with a guy one time that talked to his driver. He was rather inconsistent off the tee and every time he'd tee it up he would say something like "C'mon baby, just one more time... I know you can do it". When he did hit one more or less straight and in play he'd say something like "Oh yeah, that's what I meant... I knew you could do it".

It reminded me of someone begging their girl for sex... kind of creepy but at the same time funny. The other two guys and me had a hard time not breaking up laughing after a while. The guy was so sincere sounding -- if you didn't know he was talking to a golf club you'd think he was talking to another person.

I talk to my ball sometimes, but I hate it when others talk to my ball. I never talk to someone else's ball unless: a) it's "helpful" (like "spit it out" to a ball headed towards the trees or "carry" to a ball that looks like it's coming up short), and b) I'm correct.

Most of the people that talk to my ball seem to be wrong. Like the ball will be flying, but I'll know I hit it too solidly, and they'll say "good shot" while it's in the air but it'll carry into a bunker or over a green or something.

I also really don't like it when someone says "good shot" when I hit something that merely turned out good. For example, today I hit a heel cut with my driver. Probably lost 30 yards and not at all the shot I wanted to hit... but it found the fairway. "Good shot" my playing partner said. Grrrr.

So, I try not to comment unless I'm correct. If someone I've played with a long time (long enough to know what my good shots are) says "good shot" or follows both a and b above, I'm okay with it.

But 99% of the time, the words of Tommy Aaron apply: "keep your mouth off my golf ball."

I don't mind people who are like that. It's pretty funny, but it's a battle to keep your face straight when they do.
