Yesterday early morning rains drenched my home course and in the afternoon a steady mist continued to drizzle.  The CC was near empty.  They allow walking after 1:00pm but carry only.  So I switched bags and figured "it's cart path only I might as well walk, it's probably faster."

I played the first 18 in 3 hours and didn't rush myself at all as the course was empty.  I shot an 83 (+6,+5) on 73.3 131 7,100~ yards.  I went to the bar and had a bunch of water and a snack, caught a bud, and we both walked 9 more, shot +5 41.

The main advantages I found with walking are as follows:

1. I was more focused for each shot due to the fact that I had time to think while walking and staring down the terrain, instead of speeding over bumps and dodging roots in a cart to try to get to my next shot as fast as possible.

2. I had better reads on greens. By approaching the green head on I took more time to take note of the slope and undulation of the green's various parts.  By the time I reached the green I usually had a good idea of how fast my putt was going to go.  Granted, the drizzle made making putts a touch difficult as the course was already wet.

3. I felt like a player. There is something about walking that makes me feel like a real golfer.  And with my swing that's tough to do.

4. Camaraderie is stronger when walking down the course together for a pair of golfers.

5. I felt better tempo. I feel like walking got me in my circadian "golf" rhythm better than jetting around on a cart.

All of that being said, I probably won't walk again unless it's cart path only.  But my clubs will stay in my carry bag in case I get the itch.

Oh and I'd venture to say that it was a helluva workout.

Happy walking!!

That is why I walk. Agree 100% with your list of benefits. It's just sooo much easier getting into a zone when you're walking. Also, you always have the right club at hand whereas often in cart golf, if you've changed your mind about the lie or what you want to do with a shot, your buddy has zoomed off with the rest of your bag and you have to make due with what you have in your hand.

Yours in earnest, Jason.

What I've bolded:  It's awesome to have the entire bag at my disposal, especially around the green.  And no more bringing 6 clubs to the green, that gets old.

Now I just have to petition my home course to allow push carts...
