Google Glass - New app available to calculate distances

7 posts in this topic

http://techcrunch.com/2013/11/19/google-releases-glass-development-kit-sneak-peek-and-5-new-glass-apps-that-already-use-it/

"Also out today are a number of new applications for Glass built using the GDK. Google demoed them this morning for the press, and a cadre of developers and Glass Explorers. I got a bit of hands on time as well, notes from which I have included below. The new applications :

  • Allthecooks: A cooking app to help you read recipes without using your hands.
  • Spellista: A word jumble game.
  • GolfSight: A tool to calculate distances and the like as you wear silly pants and wave sticks at small round objects.

Screencap, err, HUDcap, errr, whatever, in link below:

Imagine if everyone wore glass on the course - you could write a kill slow play app to tell people when it's okay to hit, tips on doing things more efficiently, time limit on searching for ball, etc...

Big red bold on HUD - "just hit the freaking ball you idiot!" :-D

And an app that can aimpoint greens, or even an app that can let you see that putting grid in golf video games (sorry if I'm repeating myself, I said this in another thread).

Actually, to take this one step further, how about Google Glass Only tournaments with all these crazy apps available to every player?

Laser finder app, green reading app, wind speed/direction app, maybe an app that can read and judge your lie complete with a recommended solution: Some lady's voice plays in your bluetooth, which is obviously connected to the glasses: "Warning. Warning. Flyer lie. Warning. Flyer lie probability at 91%. Warning."

Okay, that last one may be a bit too Sci-Fi :-D

ya.. there is no way I would play with that thing.  Too annoying to always have information in my face, one of the reasons I play golf is to walk around and look at nature. I keep all the stats on my phone and can pull that data at anytime!

I think the HUD is a little distracting, but it doesn't show if it disappears when addressing the ball. I'd be more interested in having a range finder where you can just look at a pin no matter how far and it will instantly give you the distance. Maybe even set it to give live distance readings to multiple targets.

I think it'd be awesome if Glass can do something like ProTracer to keep track of your ball. Probably not possible, but I'm just saying.

Pro Trace would be awesome.  Would also be really nice if it could tell you approximately where your ball is when you're searching high and low with no luck.  Could definitely help pace of play.

    • Clearly what happened is that he spent 4-5 hours learning Tiger's balls and it adversely affected him playing with his own balls
    • 2 weeks ago... I would have said an 'out of nowhere' slice off the tee.  I'd be hitting shots into the fairway (or just off the fairway), and suddenly, I'd hit a 50 yard slice that ends up in somebody's cereal bowl in a kitchen.

Currently... a wild hook from the tee.  It started recently and I can't figure it out... at all.  Luckily it hasn't seemed to hurt me too badly (yet), but... it makes it tough because my typical shot shape (for years) has been a fade, so... I prefer to aim at the left side of the fairway.  Now, with this hook, I feel like I can't aim at the left side because it could put me in trouble... so I aim up the right and, when I hit a straight shot, it's a big push.

      ... shrug ...

    • Definitely... DEFINITELY don't be the creepy 'cart girl is hot' guy.  It gets awkward in a hurry.  In 2004, I was playing with a club that played all around the area I was living in.  I was 25 at the time and, by far, one of the younger guys in the club.  I often got paired with the guys that were mid 40's and would make completely inappropriate comments about the cart girls.  Seeing as how many of the girls were in my age range, it was always very awkward to hear what they were saying and, truthfully, I never respected anybody who made comments like that.

Beyond that... I enjoy playing with people who have personalities.  I enjoy conversation beyond the typical pleasantries.  If I'm going to be on the course with you for 4+ hours... I'd expect to know something about you by the end of the round and vice-versa.

If you're willing to trade barbs back and forth (golf related or otherwise) and laugh about them... you're my kinda guy and I can see us playing together more in the future.  Being a big sports fan... I love playing with people who can talk trash AND take it without getting hurt feelings.  There's nothing worse than getting paired with someone who makes a comment about my Giants ball marker or my Mets hat, starts talking trash... and then says they're a Lions fan or something, but gets bent out of shape when I talk trash back.

    • Thanks you.  So many people on this site misread, or completely miss the true point of a response.  Shooting29 is another perfect example. I've been in a couple of 5-hour rounds the past few seasons.  I don't go to those courses anymore.  My normal rounds on weekends with my guys all happen at 4 hours or a bit shorter. My point was exactly as you read.  No sense in trying to get ahead of the group in front only to wait on the next group and have the group of you passed waiting on you.  Sometimes there is simply no way to escape slow play other than exiting the course. dave
    • Well that 16-19-1 record isn't going to explain itself away, now is it?
