Spin?

Being pretty new to the game of golf, my short game is where I have one of my biggest problems. Today when me and my friends finished we went to the practice green and were chipping out of the ruff trying to spin the ball. Apart from the ball (prov1's or a 3layerball), and hitting undereath theball, how can I produce alot of spin? What are some 60 degree clubs that might help with this? Thanks for your help.

Practice chipping like your hitting down on the ball, this always helps me when i need the ball to choke up on the green.

Just make sure you practice this alot, for it brings into play some dangerous possiblities.

I find its easier to spin when pitching or using full swings opposed to chips. Take a lob wedge and hit down on it around 30 yards out and you'll see the spin with a decent ball

Just so you know, it is much harder to generate spin out of the rough than from a fairway.

Does the height of the ball affect it? Many of you say hit down on it, where as I try to hit clean under it, so I can choke down a SW from 25 yards and almost take a full swing and pop it straight up. When I hit down on it I tend to spray it to far, any tips?

I've seen a lot of variation in the way people play this shot. Some people play it low with a SW and spin it back while others loft it in high and stop it dead with a LW. Ultimately, the shot depends on the situation and what you're strengths and preferences are. Most of the time, I prefer to bring it in high and stop it in dead. Bringing it low and fast (Ballesteros and Olazabal style) just requires too much practice (for me) to land consistently.

Controlling distance can be achieved either through change of tempo (slow or fast), or using Pelz system where the further you take the club back the further you hit it (search the forum or Google if you're not sure about this system). You can change height by steepening your swing plane (standing slightly closer to the ball for higher shots) or hinging your wrists a bit faster. Do the opposite for lower ball flight obviously.

It is very difficult to produce high spin rates both from the rough and on chip shots. Even the best players in the world have trouble doing both. The shot you need to play(high/low) really depends on the situation you are looking at and what you feel comfortable hitting. Personally, I like to play low trajectory spinners into any green that will allow it. I find it much easier to control distance this way. Hitting high, soft landing wedges takes too much precision and doesnt leave much room for error. Hitting down, making sure that you are catching the ball first and acceleration through the ball is what produces spin. As far as recommending a wedge, its all personal preference and course conditions you typically play on that will determine what wedges are right for you.

Cleveland Golf makes great wedges, but so do Taylormade, Titleist, Mizuno, Callaway. You really need to hit them and see what you like. Make sure you take your course conditions into account when purchasing your wedges.

Hitting crisply down on the back of the ball will generate spin. Of course the higher the loft of the club, the easier it is. The design of the club is meant to generate backspin. Backspin is a product of good ball striking.

Cleveland makes extremely good, versatile wedges and are favoured by many professionals (who generate enough spin with their superior technique anyhow) but in general they do not spin as much as Vokeys or Cally MDs.

If you really want to spin it, go with a Pro-V1 and a Vokey spin milled.
Than put it back in your stance and hit down sharply (lean foward a small amount too).
But normally, you can just play a normal shot with Vokeys and it will spin well anyway

Just a word of caution, be careful what you wish for. Too much spin combined with average accuracy can be a really bad thing. I have seen to many guys concentrate so hard on hitting down on the ball to generate spin, that their accuracy is compromised and they are hitting the ball short of the hole, and then spinning it back off the green or to a lower tier, leaving them a three putt.

Spin is usefull in some situations, but I think being able to hit the ball to a spot and have it stop is more usefull for my game. Personally, I would rather stick it than spin it.

Like anything else, a lot of shots you refer to are more a matter of your just finding out what's comfortable for you, and then playing for that result on the course. Some people just don't generate spin as much, due to their particular release motion, etc.... Also, as said above, a 25 yd shot out of rough will never spin, don't even try. Until you're a scratch golfer, you shouldn't even think of spin unless you're at least 60 yds out and on a clean lie. Even at that, I wouldn't plan for any spin back, maybe bounce and check at most.

In short, worry about hitting straight and a consistent distance. If that ends up involving some spin, so be it, but I don't think "generating spin" is a worthy goal for you just yet.

You're absoultly correct ^. However, being a golf addict, and getting my lisense next month, I will be spending alot of time at the course, and alot of time practicing. And of course I will be spending alot of my time practicing my short game. I'm going to be getting a new LW neways, so I figured spin is something that would factor into what I got, as it is something, that in the future I'd like to be able to use.
