Project X is more money than I'd like to spend right now. If I fall into their 5.5 flex, would an old Rifle 5.5 be the equivalent?

Posted

We discussed this around Christmas.

The old Rifle 5.5 flex had an FCM = 5.5; but, the Project X 5.5 has FCM = 6.0, about a half a flex stiffer.

This can be confusing, since Royal Precision originally produced both Rifle and Project X shafts. (True Temper bought out financially stressed Royal P in 2006.)

That's strange. Almost shady. Better question: Which Rifle flex would you recommend for someone who finds DG R300 a bit too flexible and S300 a bit too stiff?

Posted

I don't consider it shady, Project X are super stiff shafts designed for control while Rifle are more of a neutral profile. You shouldn't fit into both profiles so why should the flexes be called the same thing? I believe 5.5 is considered about equivalent to "stiff", though there is no industry standard. PX just play about half a flex strong so you would notice a bigger difference in performance, and so fitters can stock fewer shafts but still fit a lot of people.

5.0 or soft stepped 5.5 should be close to what you want, but I know PX at least is progressive weight, so it gets heavier in 5g increments as the flex gets higher where Dynamic Gold flexes are basically each 130g unless you go for one of their uncommon flexes like x300 that are slightly different weight. That might make the 5.5 play a bit softer than Dynamic gold unless you get the PX version. Rifles are also not a low launching profile like DG.

I'd suggest, however, that you consider KBS shafts. The KBS Tour S or R+ is higher launching than DG and as smooth as they come; it's also 10$ per shaft cheaper than project X, and it's designed by Kim Braly, the maker of the original project x. They are very high quality and their specifications are very good. The non tour issue dynamic golds are a bit cheaper though.

I've recently used the newer Project X pxi and Project X 95 flighted iron shafts, in both 5.5 and 5.0 flex.

I also own several Ping, Titleist and Callaway irons, all in Regular flex.

Compared to the above, my experience is that 5.5 plays stiff and 5.0 plays firm (reg +)

Hope this information is of help to you.

If you wanted to stay in the DG family, you might hardstep the R300 or softstep the S300.

    • Day 444 - 2025-12-18 Light day of hotel room work. GEARS Summit v2.0 today. Good day.
    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
    • Day 128 12-18 Worked on rotation and getting to lead side. Still working on the flow feeling while doing that. Recorded swings.
