Hello,

Im a 2 hcp player and when I was younger I always played the big bertha irons with large sole with forgiving shots. 2 years ago I changed to the callaway razr forged irons which really looked nice and thought that would work well. However, everytime I borrow a club with a wider sole I hit the ball much better and much longer. I hit down on the ball quite much and dont know if the bounce is too little as I also tend to hit it thick quite often with the mid irons.

Has anyone had the same experience and are playing wide sole clubs although they are low handicap player?

Im looking to buy new irons that are not so thin and forged, Nike or another Callaway set would be nice, any suggestions?

thanks,

D

That is an interesting question.  Is it the sole that is changing the shot or the center of gravity?  A big sole club would also have a lower center of gravity.  Also in general a 2 hcp player is striking down on the ball and at impact the sole should have no effect.  It may help keep the club from digging though.  The wide sole would also help if you got a fat one now and then.

I was thinking today about the "phrase working the ball".  Generally better player clubs are touted as being easier to work the ball.  I can certainly curve the ball with any club, how different could it be?  If you start talking about controlling trajectory that might be another story.  Just recently I have been able control the trajectory to a degree, that is a very helpful tool.

There is nothing wrong with "game improvement" club.  I have become a fan of Ping even though I only have one Ping club.  It appears to me that the engineering department is dominant in Ping, every other large manufacturer is definitely run by Marketing.  Add the G25 irons to your list.

Good luck.

Yeah the problem I have is that I think the blade clubs dig the ball a bit easier so I hit it thick more times. Could also be that I place the ball too much on my left foot :)

I agree that blade clubs are better for working the ball with different cuts but surprisingly I almost never need to do that, perhaps im playing courses that are too easy.

Ill def check the G25 out although those look really big, I also like Nike covert irons, even the forged ones.

Thanks again for your answer, very helpful.

Mark Crossfield is a pro, was around scratch as an amature, has some of the best teaching videos on youtube, and says he still plays best with fat-soled game improvement irons.  I believe he's currently playing the Mizuno JPX-EZ.

The turf grass and soil type where you play can make a wider sole more preferable. My only problem with wide sole clubs is that the short irons don't seem as accurate and have less touch.

    • My flop shots are 6-7° down (AoA). Does that answer it? 😄  The longer answer is… You have to be able to do both shots.
    • I hope you don't mind me raising this one from the dead. I got shortgamechef's video access thing for a few months in 2024. I watched his yip fix videos (the general gist is similar to the first video above, but with a lot more detail) and it made a lot of sense. I was working on it in my backyard off a mat for a while and my yippy thing was mostly gone. Aside from anything else, the flop shot using that technique is so easy and controllable. But I got onto a golf course for the first time of the year and found myself by the green on a downslope with the ball sitting down a little in the rough and I was, not to put too fine a point on it, f***ed. Shallow is all well and good from a good flat lie and I understand it, but you can't make that your be all and end all. I still don't know if it's a good idea to use steep all the time or just when you need to. I have a hard enough time with one technique, let alone too.  Just got a pitching skillest lesson with Erik and unless I misunderstood things some, he wants me a bit steeper. @iacas - where do you fall on the steep vs shallow argument and how do you vary it according to need?
