What's going on fellas?

I was looking for somewhere to talk shop with some likeminded golfers and stumbled across this forum. There don't seem to be a lot of options out there, but I saw a lot of activity here and browsed through some great threads. Looking forward to get to know you guys!

My name's Corey. I'm originally from the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, but I've been in Austin for the past 5 years. I started playing golf about 12 or 13 years ago. Couldn't tell you what my handicap is right now, but I typically shoot in the low 80s. Had maybe 2 or 3 lessons over the years, but the vast majority of my game was taught to me by my dad. He's a great players (probably 3-4 handicap), so I've been blessed to have his guidance.

Anyways, I've been playing off and on the past couple years (work and school keep finding a way to get in the way!) But I actually just helped a buddy of mine get into the game and really enjoyed it, so I'm pumped to get a regular practice/playing schedule going again. Just in time for that Texas summer!

Just wanted to introduce myself, and looking forward to connecting with you guys.

Corey

Hey Corey! My name is Dylan and I am right down 35 from you at Texas State University. Let me know if you want some good areas to go golf at. I know a lot of great courses in this general area! Always good to meet a fellow Texan. That Texas heat is coming indeed!

Hey Dylan, good to hear from you!

My fiancee is actually finishing up at Texas State, though she takes most of her courses at the Austin campus. What are your favorite courses to play in the Austin area?

I've played several of the Austin muni courses and found them pretty good. So far I've played Lions (sad to see that one go), Morris Williams, Penick, Roy Kizer, and Jimmy Clay. I think Jimmy Clay's is my favorite of those.

I actually tend to stay away from the Austin area as much because the courses are so dry. My favorite course toward that area is Onion Creek although that is private and I have only played it once. Plum Creek in Kyle is my "home course" so to speak. Moving toward San Antonio, I really like Vaaler Creek in Blanco as well as The Bandit in New Braunfels.

I never played Lions, although I was supposed to and ended up having to back out. Jimmy Clay is a great course from what I hear. I need to make it out there before I graduate here in August.

Hey Dylan,

Nice. I checked out Onion Creek's website and it's definitely on my short list of places to play soon. Hope you can make it out to Austin and play a few courses this way before it gets too dry. So far so good, but I'm sure that'll change in a few weeks. Feel free to get in touch if you're ever playing in the area. Always looking for people to play with.

Hey Corey,

I used to live in Austin, but am now in the D/FW area. Β It's been a while since I last played in that area, but a couple of other suggestions are Bluebonnet Hill and Riverside G.C. Β Bluebonnet Hill is an affordable place to play with some good holes that I think you'll enjoy. Β Riverside is the old Austin C.C. where Kite and Crenshaw grew up playing and Penick used to teach. It's kind of a jinky layout, but it's worth playing at least once because of the history.

If you ever get back up to North Texas, give me a shout!

Hey Jeff,

Awesome! Thanks for your suggestions; I appreciate it. I haven't heard of Bluebonnet Hill, so thanks for the recommendation. Played Riverside a few times over the years. And I agree that the layout is a little strange, but I definitely enjoyed playing out there. Don't know if you remember that par 3 that runs right next to the road, but my buddy definitely hooked it over the fence and nearly hit a bus!

Where are your favorite places to play in the D/FW area? Trophy Club is pretty much my "home course," as I've played it more than any other courses in that area. I also played Grapevine a lot and enjoyed Bear Creek and Sky Creek as well.

I try to make it up there every few months to visit family and friends (my dad's big into golf), so I'll let you know when I do. Always looking for people to play with!

Corey

p.s. - Played Morris Williams yesterday. Other than slow pace of play, it was pretty nice. They did a big remodel of the clubhouse and made a lot of improvements to the course.

When I lived in Austin some time ago I remember a course named Riverside that was pretty good.Β  also remember playing a Tom Kite design called River place this is no kidding at least half the holes your driving through a chute of trees at least 150 yards long, this was Kites first design and maybe he thought his only so he went all out.

I play mostly on the west side of the Metroplex. Β The majority of the time I play at Hawk's Creek, although I've played quite a bit at Whitestone G.C., Iron Horse, Split Rail and Southern Oaks. Β By all means give me a shout when you come up and maybe we can get out and play.

Flopster, I played River Place many times when I lived in Austin. Β It was an upscale public course back then, but I noticed it's now a private facility. Β It's a pretty course, but you're right, it wasn't easy. A lot of the fairways were basically crowned, and good drives tended to kick into the rough, but other than that I liked it.

Your right I remember hitting some drives I thought I should have been on the fairway left or right side but instead rough, I played it back in 1990 and I swear I remember forced carrys that were not short and chutes you had to hit it through, I wasn't as good a player at that time so it tore me up a bit but it was very nice.

hey guys, my name is Kane. i'm a true beginner :-(. i haven't played any rounds as of yet, but i've had a lot of lessons (about 20hrs total or somewhere in there). i'm very hesitant to jump on a course without a least being able to keep the ball in play. however, i'm anxious to meet some beginning players to help push me out onto the course and get started. how do you guys go about meeting up and talking golf, taking shots at the range, or even playing a round.

Hey guys. Β Thanks for reaching out, Corey. Β I live in Leander off #6 at Crystal Falls. Β I can get around town pretty easily, but a twilight 9 at Crystal is always an option. Β I'd love to get together with some folks in the area....especially some grinders with good attitudes, regardless of skill level. Β Other than regulars at my club, I don't really know many golfers around ATX.
