Hello fellow golfers. I have 3 videos below showing my not so good swing fron the side, front, and back. i have a hit and pray swing, hoping that it does go straight. I plan on taking lessons at some point and not sure if i should try to correct what is bad or find a totally new swing. What would you recondmend? sorry for the crappy quality.

You have a good tempo, if you are having problems with distance try acclerating the club a little more on your down swing, Your backswing is perfect speed, speed up your followthrough a bit. Also I see that your front foot is slightly open, try to keep it straight and in line with the target to prevent slicing.

Some hits your hitting the ground before the ball, keep your eye on the ball.

Your hips uncoil and unleash after you hit. You basically swing and then your hips start to turn. Try to get your hips incorperated into your swing. Unleash and do a full hip turn when your coming down on the ball, not after youve hit it.

Your swing has potential, id stick with it. Good luck!

You have a big lateral shift in your swing that may be a big cause for your "hit and pray" swing. Its hard to find any consistency when your entire body is moving off the ball and back to it. Try keeping your head still and swinging more around your spine. Dont be afraid to turn those hips. Might want to work on keeping that left foot a little more grounded throughout the swing also.

You also look like you are cramping the ball a little. Your back looks pretty straight up and down. Would I be correct in saying that you hit mostly pull slices with the driver? If so, back up off the ball a little and get a little bend in your hips. Just be sure to keep that spine angle throughout the swing.

From what I can see is that your ball position is find. I tend to put mine a little deeper in my stance, because I usually get to far ahead with my front side causing my hands to trail equaling pull hooks.

The first thing I believe you should focus on is getting a more athletic step up. Start from the ground and work your way up.

Hitting the driver you usually want to have a slightly wider stance. As you can see in the side video at 2:04 you can see your front foot step (or slide) into the bucket (opening yourself towards your target). I suggest you find a comfortable and consistent stance to maintain proper alignment throughout your swing.

Once you find your comfortable and consistent stance I suggest two more things to work on. Adding more bend to your knees and keeping your chest up right throughout your swing. Doing both of these should fix your lateral movement seen in the side view. Ideally you should snapping your front knee at or just before the point of contact, but don't worry about that just yet. Once you have found your c/c stance and begin to work on adding bend to your knees and keeping your chest up right throughout your swing thought should be to "swing around your spine".

One tip, the lower you tee that ball the straighter it will go, although it may not go as far.

definitely keep your left foot grounded
you seem to lift it a bit and coil up your left knee a tiny bit at the top of your swing
also i can't tell cause it's too fast on video but it looks like you might be cutting across the ball, that is coming from an outside path... do you slice? if so then that's why

Ignore all the posted suggestions. Your swing looks very good for a novice golfer. You have feel and rhythm. To improve, just concentrate on one thing: reduce your backswing. You need not have a backswing, with any club, in which the club goes past about 225 degrees. You are going past 270 (past horizontal at the top). By making your swing more compact, you gain the ability to hit the ball solidly on a consistent basis. That's all you need to know.

Watch the tour pros, a lot of the guys are going to a very abbreviated backswing, like 180 degrees with short to mid irons. Just remember to accelerate thru the shot, and finish facing the hole, holding the finish.

I would have to agree totally with this

Also try and hit the ball from the inside. It looks like you pull your hands across the ball at impact, creating a slice!

He does. He also slaps at it with his hands, hence the right arm up in his face on the finish.

Equipment, Setup, Finish, Balance, and Relax. All equal in importance and all dependent on each other. They are the cornerstones of a good golf swing.

Thanks for the great replies. I been down w/major sinus problems and finally feel good enough to get on the web. I was talking to a friend and he took lessons at the local junior college for hhalf the cost of going to the course. The instructor teaches at one of the premier courses that charges an arm and a leg.

As some of you seen, i do have a slice that has been w/me since day one. I will get this correct as well as learning the proper grip and ball stance once i do get some lessons.

    • At address? I think so. Downswing and through? IDK. I doubt if a whole lot of golfers, if any at all, deliberately think "I have a 9-iron so I need to bend half an inch more through the downswing compared to my 8 iron".

    • Thanks! Evolvr, for sure. My indoors setup is pretty close to ready. I want to add a few more lights as it's a pretty dark place to begin with (old barn). Plan to use my iPhone 14 Pro, 720p 240 FPS. I think I got a tripod somewhere, but I nail everything down so I'll make a small box I can just plop the phone into. That way I know it's always in the same spot and level. How does the setup look in terms of angles and stuff.  I saw that topic and bookmarked it for later. A technique where you want the head to move forward and down? I've been doing that for twenty years! (not on purpose) 😛 Looks fun, I'll certainly try it out. £7000. That's certainly "down the line". What would be a good price? Thanks. I'll probably hold off until at least winter comes and see where we're living at that point. For the next six months I'll combine indoor practice with the range, which helps.
