He's been riding along with me over the last 2 years while I played golf, which generally ends with him putting around on the practice green after I finish a round. He and his brother (4) like to go into the back yard and hit plastic golf balls at a large tree endlessly. So, I thought now's the time that my oldest is ready to actually play on the course. We went to Independence Golf Club here in Richmond, which has a phenomenal youth program and a 9 hole short course (par 3). The youth tees are perfect for his age, in that every hole is between 30-60 yards with no carries. Effectively, they can bump and run the ball up to the green. I'm happy to say he had a great time on the course. Their staff and everyone on the course were very encouraging for him. And I'll say, their championship course is closed for renovations this summer, so the guys who'd normally be out there were on the short course working on their short game. Everyone was very kind and it went a long ways. He was grinning ear to ear the entire time. Safe to say I think he's already in love with this game.

We didn't keep a score. I don't think it would have been too astronomical. His biggest struggle was on the green, speed being the main issue. But as for getting up and on the green, he didn't have much of an issue there.
He has a pretty athletic swing!
Thanks! I was certainly impressed. He's been playing t-ball/coach-pitch for the last three years, so that definitely shows in his swing.

Awesome....His form looks pretty decent as well, especially for being so young. Sounds like it was a fun day.

    • Day 14: 2026.01.16 Some swings late in the day to confine trying to embed the hip rotation I'm working on.
    • I don't know what to tell you. You can't test wedges with range balls, and you have a LOT more info to gather before you can begin to really even test anything else, either.
    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
