Wanted to get input on strange situation that occurred in 2 man team match play tourney. After all played their approach shots and eventually got to the green, our opponent was going to putt and declared he hit the wrong ball on a chip and said they lose. Then, my partner said he picked up a ball when our opponent was hitting his shot, thinking it was a range ball (hole is near the range). It was out opponents ball. I asked my partner timing, and he said he picked up the ball before our opponent hit bit who was lined up on the wrong ball and eventually hit. We declared the loss to is on the hole. Curious, was this the correct ruling?

Your opponent is disqualified from the hole for playing a wrong ball.  This does not affect his partners play, even it the wrong ball was his..  Your partner incurs a 1 stroke penalty for moving an opponents ball other than during a search.  The fact that it was the opponent's who hit a wrong ball is irrelevant. (although see below)

So the hole should have been finished with both you and your partner finishing the hole, your partner adding 1PS to his score.  The opponent who did not hit a wrong ball could have continued playing out the hole.

The fact that your opponents conceded the hole means your team won the hole, although they did not have to.

Also, if your partner had picked up your opponents ball after the opponent had played a stroke with a wrong ball, your partner would not have incurred a penalty, as the opponent was disqualified from the hole after he made a stroke at a wrong ball.

I think I got it all correct.

Regards,

John

    • Why?  You would never be waiting on me.  I am one of the fastest players you will ever run into on the golf course.  I am extremely fit and almost always the first to the green and the first to the next tee box.  When I play with my 16 year old step son who is a 3 handicap, he tells me to slow down.  Also,  what does it take me?  40 seconds round trip to walk off 30 yards?  (which is the max I walk off)  I like to have a look at the break around the hole which helps me to hole out chips which I did for birdie from 27 yards just the other day.  I also do this while waiting on my playing partners to catch up to me so you need not worry about being irritated, I can pretty much guarantee you that you could not keep up with me on the golf course.  🙂
