My bag at the moment is as follows:

Driver

3 wood

4 wood

3 hybrid

4 iron

5 iron

6 iron

7 iron

8 iron

9 iron

Pitching wedge

Sand wedge

Putter

Being a not-very-good golfer, I can't hit long irons consistently, and therefore am planning to replace the 4 and possibly the 5 iron with hybrids soon. Since I only have 13 clubs, I'm thinking about getting another wedge, but I'm not sure what type of a wedge to get; I hit the PW about 125 and the SW about 80 yards. Or do you think there is a different gap in my bag that needs filling in? I will provide specifics such as other distances upon request; I'm not sure what to do and would appreciate some advice.

Thanks!

I am a minimilist when it comes to clubs in the bag. I say take out any club you don't hit well. Maybe remove the 3 wood 4 iron and 5 iron. A 4 hybrid or a 5 wood may suit you better and a gap wedge. Play around with the bag makeup and find clubs that work. Removing the ones you hit poorly is a good way yo start. You can't mess up the shot if the club isny in th bag.

I'd absolutely put a gap wedge in there to fill that gap (hence the name) between your pitching and sand wedges. Your pitching and sand wedges are likely 48* and 56* respectively. If so a 52* gap wedge would fit in perfectly. If you really have problems with longer irons, but find that you hit hybrids pretty well (like a lot of us), you might also consider replacing the 4-iron with a hybrid. Welcome to the site!

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking of a 52 degree wedge, for an 100-yard distance or thereabouts - which would be a very helpful one to have. The 3 wood is a club I hit less consistently than my driver, so it ends up rarely coming out of the bag anyway; same with the 4 wood. The long irons are definitely the ones I start shanking and/or topping whenever I dare to try to use them. They will be replaced with hybrids.

Thanks again.

    • I am fascinated by this article. Given so many are upset, I would love to see how the calculations changed for them. In the USA, it likely reduced handicaps, at least for me. In the UK it appears to inflate handicaps but not uniformly?

    • To flog this subject even further, if that's even possible, this article from Golf Monthly just appeared today in one of my news feeds. Written by a golf writer in the UK who I never heard of, he's basically saying that there should be only 3-5 rounds from the most recent 20 that should count towards the average and only competitive rounds should count. He claims the erratic scorers would have less of an advantage than they do now. He makes a lot of references to "club golfers" in the UK being the ones who are mostly dissatisfied. https://share.google/qmZZBEoJvOxHxJGil  In my experience with my league where we have golfers with indexes ranging from 5 to 40, looking at the weekly results from the past two years, I can detect no pattern that would substantiate the claim that the current system gives an unfair advantage to either erratic golfers (aren't we all?) or higher handicappers. Apparently though, at least in the UK, this seems to be "a thing."
