I'm asking about the rubber thing on top of the putter :) why was the pistol grip invented? was it for a certain type of grip? why are fat grips popular? round grips?

1. To fit the shape of your hands.

2. To minimise the wrist breaking down during the stroke.

Maybe you should try Googling "Why fat putter grips".

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

The idea behind the fatter putter grips is that they lead to a stroke that is less wristy.

Round grips (like the ones Edel uses) are great because they are always aligned properly... If a pistol grip is put on incorrectly (or moves over time) it can cause you to aim a couple of degrees one way or the other,.

My scotty has a pistolero grip. This grip has a flare that grows into the fingers more than a traditional pistol or Scotty's pistolini. Good for people who wear a cadet (short fingers relative to palm) glove. The design is not forgiving if misaligned. I agree about the more rounded grips being consistent. The main thing for me is simply what size round grip.

This is big. I had someone install a SC grip on my putter for me and I had to take it off and redo it myself because it was off a couple degrees. It really pays when installing these grips to have a ball nearby to hit a few putts with to insure that the grip is straight. The same goes for a Super Stroke, but to a lesser extent (it just has a flat top, as opposed to a flat top and a flared back).

Given that the name of the object in question is "grip," I'll give you one guess. ;-)
