Is lowering the upswing (parallel to the shoulder) cures slices?

Jim Furyk has a really high back swing, so is Michelle Wie.

I wanna hear some opinions.

i started doing that because i couldnt stop shanking the ball but it worked for me pretty well. still its not a fix its just a compensation which probably isnt a good thing to get used to.

Secondly, there are quite a few factors in whether lowering your upswing will yield results and cure a slice. As you mentioned Jim Furyk and others, Fred Couples, have high upswings. The downswing is what you should look at. There was an article by Jim Mclean, I think about a year ago, where they analyzed the shaft angle on the downswing. Almost all the pros had a shaft angle on the down swing at near 45 degrees, yet many had a differing angle on the upswing. Most were steeper angle on the upswing.
My point is that if you go steeper on the upswing you will want to be setting the club near a 45 degree angle on the downswing for square contact. Obviously for some people steeper upswing will cure the slice because it is the move they like to get them in a good downswing position. When I used a 2 plane swing I liked using an upright backswing, it seemed to help me get into a better downswing position.

One reason I like the one plane swing is for the consistency it provides me on shaft angle. The swing is shorter and closer to the 45 degree shaft angle on both upswing and downswing.

Swing = Stacked and On Plane when possible.

Michelle Wie is over rated, but her swing, at least in the past, is regarded as technically sound if not highly proficient. Her over ratedness is due to her lack of maturity.

david leadbetter was or is her coach, he even said he noticed something wierd that has shown up in her swing which is making it faulty. i think it was in last month's golf digest...

Lower upswing promotes body rotation. Some golfers have slices because their bodies do not rotate. Only their hand hitting the ball without the body. This is what my Instructor told me.

But it my case, when I fully turn my body, I create awful slices because my hand is moving faster than my body. So I only turn my waist a bit with my shoulder facing to the right (I'm right handed). And at the top, my hands are right above the right shoulder, but not parallel. Currently, I have a left to right ball flight. Is this a fade?

A lower top of the backswing position does promote more body rotation but you're shot shape is going to be highly dependent on how you release the clubhead. For instance, Duval/Trevino/Hogan all have relatively low hands but they all play fades most of the time because they have relatively passive hands and release via their bodies.

Yes, left to right is fade if you're a righty.

If you definitely want to hit a draw but you're out of sequence, here is a swing thought that may help. Keep the butt of the clubhead pointed at the ball for as long as possible during the backswing. When you start your downswing, think about waiting for the club to drop behind you as you fire your lower body, then clamp your right elbow to the right hand side of your rib cage and fire as hard as you please with lower or upper body. The ball should start out right of target and then draw back towards your target (assuming you have a neutral grip).

Note of caution though, a draw is a hell of a lot more difficult to control than a fade primarily due to the distance a draw rolls after hitting the deck and the tendency of draws to come out lower than fades.

By the way, swing videos would really help...
