Just recently I had logged into my clubs website and they are advertising some new gadget that is suppose to help measure just about everything from swing, speed, distance, distance carried and spin of ball.  The gadget is called an ES14 from Ernest Sports and is being advertised for over $500.00.  Do any of you know what this is?  I would like to know a little more info especially from those that actually own it. Does it work, is it accurate, is it worth the investment?  All the good stuff info.

I saw the ES12 at the PGA Show a couple years ago and it was very accurate. @david_wedzik and @iacas even bought a couple for the Golf Evolution.

For more on the ES14.

I've been checking these out as well.  I've decided to commit to playing more and I can get my distances dialed in that way.

I already have a zelocity pure contact which simply measures ball speed and gives an estimated yardage based solely on the ball speed. The ES14 measures ball speed and clubhead speed and then an app calculates everything else. So I would think the launch angel and spin guesstimates will only be close if you already have a close to ideal AoA and path. Maybe I'm wrong?

A month ago I was given access to the ES 14 from a friend and have used it at the range about 7 times over the last month.

I find the device easy to use with a smart phone, records all the data. I think the only direct measurement is the ball speed and the club head speed. The spin, launch angle and carry distance and total distance appears to be calculated. Obviously the smash factor is calculated since it is defined as the quotient of the ball speed and the club head speed. The difference between the carry and total distance appears to be trivial as my observations see an absolute number like 9 yards difference for a 5 iron. Or 15 yards difference for a driver. The carry distances seem to be short by 7-10% as determined by laser range finder.

That being said, I found the device very useful in comparing the differences between club or shafts or both.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
