I have to have my clubs re-gripped. The grips on four of them are worn out and the others are going on their way. This may be the time to take care of another issue. The clubs are pretty heavy.

I have a set of Cobra BioCell irons with the graphite R shafts. Due to my height and measurements and the way I strike the ball in the fitting process they're +1" length.

The standard swing weight for these clubs in the normal length is D1 for 5-9i and D2 for PW & GW. Mine come in at D7 +/- 1 and D9.

My wedges with an added inch went to E1. Yeah, heavy.

I was speaking with one of the people about adjusting this when I regrip since it had been suggested to put some lead tape under the grip as a counterbalance. This would make the whole club heavier, but how would it affect the feel of the club? Will it make the club a little bit easier to swing? Does it really work?

I'd try say the 7 iron to see how it felt before doing the entire set like this, but before I do anything I thought I'd ask.

NOTE: I can hit the clubs in their current configuration. It's just that I'm regripping and can make this adjustment at the same time if it works.

Also the grip.... I currently have the Winn Dritacs and I'm not going that way again. They didn't last. I'm probably going to go with the Golfpride Tour Velvet or I'm considering this new grip the MCC Plus4 The midsize is 12g heavier than the mid-sized Tour Velvet, and 17g heavier than what I have on the club currently.

The only thing holding me back from the MCC series is that I don't use a glove in the summer -- hand tan issues. I end up with one white hand and one dark hand.

@DrvFrShow ,

I would recommend against mid-size grips. I have large hand and wear XL gloves, but play standard +3 wraps as per my fitter.  Too large a grip can cause issue with your swing.

There are other ways to balance the irons too.  Lead counter weights fit into the shaft end.  The shop should be able to set the swing weight to what you desire.

I wouldn't worry about the added weight. You sound like a pretty strong player for your height and have a decent swing speed.

I had Winn Dritac in midsize but they're a small midsize. I get hand cramps with a standard size grip so a double or triple wrap would do better.

Thanks for the link. While it won't work in graphite shafts, they did have this - http://www.golfworks.com/product.asp?pn=GW0113 that they recommended for graphite shafts. I'll have to wait until Wednesday to speak with the local club builder because I want someone who at least knows what they're doing. Maybe we can also take a little SW off that Razr Fit and knock it down to D2 like my Bertha.

There is a grip by Boccieri that has 17 grams of tungsten weighting in the end to counterbalance the weight of the club. It's called the Secret Grip. It's essentially the same as the lead tape thing.

My neighbor just mentioned the Secret Grip, but my Swing Analyzer fits into the end of the club, and I wouldn't be able to use it anymore. His playing partner had some very good things about these grips.

I found some precut lead tape strips at Golfsmith. At least with pre-cut we can be consistent.

I'd like to get my set down about four swing weights.

Thanks for mentioning the Secret Grip.

    • Played several holes today with my Buddy's left haded clubs.  I was going to order just woods, but after playing again today and hitting the irons well, I will be ordering a complet set of Left handed Clubs.    They are Callaway Edge, Regular flex.  I am excited !  Will let you know after I try them and let you know how well they performed.    Retired Old Man, Terry
    • Depends in part on what lie the greens crew left me. If it's first cut of rough or fairway and clear shot to cup, it's an 8i chip and run. If it's shaggy, or I have to go over ridge or bunker, it's a cut shot with a 58* LW.
