I am not a pro but i can say my misses were hooks and slices with woods, not that every ball was like that just when i missed it. i would swing before by turning and using my arms to hit the ball. since i took my arms out of it and let gravity and the pivot do everything the consistency is incredible, great ball striking. maybe someone can better describe this feeling. when people used to say let the arms fall i mis-interpreted it. i would let my arms fall from the top of the swing for a brief second then tried to hit it which resulted in a jerk motion to ball off plane. it wasnt until i wathced brians episode 3 on you tube and watched just about all the pros on tv and saw their arms falling from the top all the way through the ball. the best way to describe it is get to the top of the swing and let the arms fall right down with gravity and use your pivot to make it happen at the ball. i used to watch these pros and say "how the heck do they get the club in that position in the downswing ??????" it was a mystery to me for years and now i finally found out that its because they are not PUTTING IT in that positon in the downswing, it is falling into that position!!!! this is only one way to do it. brian says there are others, pulling or pushing it down. i have hit thousands, and thousands and thousands of balls and tried pulling, pushing, hitting down, from the inside, and the best feeling i have ever had is letting that club FALL to the inside.

Moreira85, thanks for sharing Brian's video.

I agree with you in that actively pulling or pushing the arms down in the downswing will cause problems and should be avoided for some golfers. I've also read many golfers claim they let their arms drop a little into a groove before rotating through. I've always thought that this works successfully for the two plane and a synchronized style of swing as long as they can time it properly.

Now as for the golfer that coils up kinetic energy on the back swing, it's a different story. When he or she is ready to start their down swing, they unwind (rotate) their hips, which pulls their torso and shoulders along. Brian explains it well when he says the upper body is up against the inert left arm and moving it out and around to a square position. I believe that maintaining the spine tilt (from address) during this rotation is what forces the club head into the ground, thus creating a divot. IMHO, gravity is an insignificant contributor of this powerful downwards strike. And any added manipulation of the arms or grip in pushing or pulling the club down will lead to casting causing weaker and less precise shots.

Regards,

Mark

My iron game has improved quite a bit lately by using the "pulling" motion at the top of the backswing. The thought I employ is at the top of the swing to "pull the butt-end of the club towards the ball" This helped to create lag in my swing. You don't want to yank it down with just your hands, but kind of use your lower body to initiate the move.

It's taken some getting used to, my irons have been longer and straighter than ever, I'm over shooting greens when I ALWAYS used to come up short.

Just can't seem to translate this to my driver though, it creates to steep of a swing.

I had no idea that TW and AS have almost the same, identical swing.

The Tiger swing in the video is an older one. It's still pretty similar, but through his work with Hank, it's a little different now.

i think of it as dropping into the slot, or stabbing the ball with the grip of the club

    • That was a good watch. When I started working on pelvis in the backswing. I thought, this sounds contradictory to those leg straightening threads on the site. Erik has already done a correction. Then the last lesson we went more down the route of feeling the right knee gains flex. It doesn’t, but the feeling keeps my knee position in a good range. Also, I just realized how much extra work my right hip needed to do to stabilize the body with the proper weight shift. Those glute and hip stabilizers got worked. 🤣 I wish this evolution in the golf instruction happened 20 years ago! 😭
    • I've been Playing Golf for: 40 yrs My current handicap index or average score is: 4.0 factor My typical ball flight is: Straight however sometimes slight draw. The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: squirt to the right due to to much arm not enough turn. • The first issue Erik spoke about is something we worked on for my swing during both GEARS sessions. GEARS was showing my pelvis center moving towards the ball during the back swing. I wasn’t the 4” guy though! This forced me to correct on the downswing to give myself space. My hip rotation was to high as well. We corrected it by first getting the weight off my heels in my stance and getting my posture correct. Then the feel was shifting back into my right hip at a 45 degree angle. This kept my pelvis center from moving towards the ball at the start of the backswing. I also didn’t sway back as much as I felt I did because of the angle I was shifting. Feel Ain’t Real. The cool thing about GEARS is as you work on something you can see the exact (Real) change happening. On video, it is much harder to spot this issue because of the 2D nature of filming. But I know what to look for now. Sadly, I was hurt all last year and most of this year so I really haven’t been able to work on it much. I did do a lot of backswing work though.
