Spent the day out at Bay Hill today.......

Even with my untrained eyes, I could tell there was something up w/ the greens @ Bay Hill.....then I heard Jason Day tell his caddy that they were "bad" - then he reiterated that when Gary Koch came by for a chat......member that I was walking with said something about Bay Hill losing their greenskeeper and that Bay Hill was changing greens in May......

Any view on why they are so bad?  It looked to me that the Orlando part of Florida had received quite a lot of rain from the turn of the year.

It has been unseasonably warm here in FLA (even the strawberry growers are complaining that the season is shorter due to the warm temps).....maybe overseeded greens don't grow as well without cooler temps? Totally unknowledgeable speculation on my part.

Odds: too bad Spieth and Reed isn't playing this week.......as well as Lefty......thought it was disrespectful to Arnie not to play in his tournament?

Wow I had no idea those three weren't playing. I can't support that. If you're healthy, you play in Arnie's tournament. The tour and their livelihood as they know it wouldn't be nearly what it is today without Arnie.

The greens are bad because of a failed grass treatment a few years ago.  They are redoing them after this tournament.

Surprised that Phil isnt playing...  Reed doesn't care about respect and Spieth just won an event...

Dufner and Dustin Johnson as well.......

BTW, had the chance to watch a few practice rounds yesterday.....

Jason Day, Rickie Fowler, and Rory in same grouping on Thursday/Friday......that'll draw a ton of spectators, won't it?

Thats the group I would follow, for sure.

While sitting down under an umbrella getting shade and relaxing the legs yesterday (spent 8 hours on the course watching players), I had to laugh at a scene of several adult men chasing a golf cart down a cart path......it was like the Pied Piper having kids following him. Who was in the cart? Arnold Palmer -----he was zipping by. I'm not sure what he told the autograph seekers, but I think a few of them that were chasing him came back with smiles, successfully getting the signature.

Also saw Sean Foley walk by. I nodded/smiled at him.  Then I thought to myself......there goes that scum bag who ****ed up Tiger's swing - okay, I could be wrong, but he should get some of the blame, shouldn't he?

If not it doesn't bode well for the question of whether golf is in a good place post Tiger/Phil.

In my book? Heck yes. But that blame can be spread around among several folks

McIlRoy had a huge following during the practice round (as would be expected). So did Adam Scott. I was surprised that Jason Day had about 3-4 people following him.

On an unrelated note- wouldn't it be a great golf story if Sam Saunders did well (won)?

That would be one of the coolest first wins in history!

I don't buy that the players (especially, the young ones) are playing "to show Arnie the respect" line.   To most, I think it's just another tournament and I don't blame them.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
